Hobbies – Part 1
I have been fascinated for many years with Genealogy and I think the bigger picture of how all these connect to each other. Many of my friends hate it when I stumble upon an old cemetery and I start hanging out taking photos of every grave stone I see. I spent almost 2 days in Schofield Barracks Post Cemetery in Hawaii once taking pictures of every tombstone. The bad thing is I lost my master list with names but I still have the file with the digital copy and name. With the Internet my goal is really quite simple – provide a record of someone who once lived here. My favorite website for this is http://www.findagrave.com and my favorite software is Family Tree Maker where I currently have over 28,000 family and friends entered.
How does this all tie into bugs, well I must admit bugs were a hobby way before the genealogy was but I guess both are just fun for me. Like this very interesting fact that Termites are more closely related to Cockroaches than to ants, bet you didn’t see that one coming. Tombstones are also a window into our past, like these two
So let’s discuss these tombstones: The first person who comes up with the best answer will get a gift – probably a gift card. What did these 2 people die from? This is my opinion based on the info provided with the tombstones.
- These tombstones are located in Luraville, Florida (Suwannee County) in the panhandle of the state.
- They are from the period of 1862-1887
- The wife passes away before her husband.
Rules, the correct answer is what I believe happened to them. So just for the record – I’m the official on this one.

I’m going to go with Yellow Fever.
I believe she died in childbirth and he then killed himself.
That was good but not the correct answer. Good try!
I was kidding. They died from Yellow Fever, I’ll bet. It took those folks a LONG time to figure out that they were catching it from MOSQUITOS. They were a little slow, those folks….
Of course, you being a guy and all, you would never put anything as sentimental as a childbirth/death/suicide on your website, Stinger….. And why does my icon come up as a curly-haired blonde piece of toast with its tongue hanging out?

“Well, that’s an easy one. They both died of the 1887 “Yellowjack” or yellow fever epidemic that swept Florida that year. Probably brought in by immigrants from Cuba. “
