Bedbugs with MRSA – new information

” The one bright side to having bedbugs — if you wanted to be optimistic about it — has always been that at least the tormenting critters didn’t transmit disease. But now researchers in Vancouver report that they’ve found bedbugs with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.”  (link here) (link here) The study suggest that  some bedbugs could be carrying antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

“It’s not clear whether the germs were transmitted from people to bedbugs, or the other way around, according to a study published Wednesday in Emerging Infectious Diseases, a publication of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “It emphasizes the need for some further studies to determine the potential bedbugs have for transmitting these agents,” Robert Wirtz, chief of entomology at the CDC’s Center for Global Health, told The Washington Post. ” While the work was well done and it shows an association, it doesn’t establish that bedbugs are capable of transmitting the bacteria.”
This may put an entirely new spin on control of bedbugs, I think the thing to remember is not to PANIC. If you think you have bedbugs just do some research but don’t put off treatment. Don’t wait as the problem may get worse. Be proactive when traveling and as always if you have concerns contact a Pest Management Professional for information on treatments and options.
