Health Checks & Symptoms – Bedbug Awareness Week day3

Health Checks & Symptoms

Health Checks – Well it’s that time of year, school is out and traveling begins. Whether at home or traveling for summer vacation, bedbugs could be a key concern. Although named for their habit of feeding on human hosts in bed. They can be found in all types of locations and items. To promote public awareness and to help avoid issues, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has declared June 4-10, 2017 as BedBug Awareness Week. ProBest Pest Management is joining NPMA in this important public education effort by sharing common signs of a bed bug infestation to keep an eye out for this summer.

“Just like people enjoy traveling in the summer months, so do bed bugs, and they love using personal belongings like suitcases, boxes and shoes as a hiding place, just to be near a food supply,” said Keith V. Birkemeyer aka Dr. Bug,  at ProBest Pest Management in Gilbert, Arizona. “With these biting pests being easily transported, it’s important to know the top signs of an infestation. This way proper precautions can be put in place  to know when it’s time to call a licensed pest control professional such as ProBest 480-831-9328 or call us at 623- 414-0176 to assess the situation.”

Concerns

Dr Bug shares the following  signs and symptoms of a possible bed bug infestation:

  • Small red to reddish brown fecal spots on mattresses, upholstery or walls
  • Molt bed bug skins, their white, sticky eggs or empty eggshells
  • Red, itchy bite marks, especially on the legs, arms and other body parts exposed while sleeping
  • Very heavily infested areas may have a characteristically sweet odor

“During the summer, travel increases and so does the likelihood of encountering bed bugs. We strongly encourage the public to take extra precautions to avoid encounters with these biting pests,” added Dr. Bug.”

Tricky BedBugs

Damn BedBugs, they are sneaky and will hide in any hole or crevice. Click on the picture and see if you can find the bedbugs in the hole. What should you look for if you think you have an infestation:

  1. Red or black spots on bedding material.
  2. Adult Bedbugs are the size of a apple seed, babies are much smaller and see through.
  3. Smell of iron (result of blood).
  4. Don’t just look at the bed check the cracked paint, wallpaper, any crevices in wood or holes in computer desk.

If you’re not sure, don’t waste time. The longer you wait the faster the problem can get out of hand. Check the following site http://www.pestworld.org for more information.

Bed Bugs are still out there folks…

These bugs are a major pain in the — to many who thought it wouldn’t happen to them. Calls have increased due to summer travel, so please beware and take precautions. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has a lot of good information, so please take a moment of your time to read and understand.

Now on to a touchier situation, don’t believe everything you read about Bed Bugs but rather visit those sites that have good information.  People still tend to I read this or that and I try my best to set the record straight, but the NPMA really is the authority on bugs. They set the standard with QualityPro and a staff Entomologist. The more you know = KNOWLEDGE and we all know that Knowledge is Power.

Why are mattress encasements so important?

MicronOne

There is an old saying and I’m not sure of the truth, but here it is ” A mattress doubles its weight due to dust mites and their debris in 10 years“. Now with that said, I do believe that a mattress not sealed accumulates debris like sweat, urine spills from babies or pets, shed skin and dust mites. Now doesn’t it just make  sense to cover the mattress.

So lets say you purchase the mattress for $800 and within the first 3 months that stuff above happens and you know it will. If you had an encasement that was able to eliminate all microscopic toxins, allergens, dust mites, bed bugs and was breathable, lockable and waterproof wouldn’t you want it for your comfort?

Look what I found in the dumpster?

probestpestmanagementIMAG0311 People don’t often throw out good stuff and the finding of a used mattress in the dumpster triggered my mind to investigate. I was right, I found evidence of bed bug fecal spotting. So I know right off the bat that somebody has an infestation of bed bugs. Throwing away the mattress probably won’t solve the problem, it might but probably not. Most people think that since they are called bed bugs, they only live on beds and that is just not so.

So I’m going to give you my number 1 best recommendation on mattresses and box springs. Buy mattress covers, its worth the money. We sell them at our office.

Draft of Federal Bed Bug Strategy

“The management of bed bugs continues to pose a major challenge to state and local governments, private industry and the American public. EPA is inviting comment on the draft Federal Strategy on Bed Bugs which provides guidance for how the various levels of government can contribute to minimizing the negative effects of bed bug infestations on human health and the economy.”

Comments open until 9/18/2013 – Bed Bugs are not going away anytime soon. Take a stab (couldn’t help myself) and see if you have any comments.
