Dryer Lint

Dryer lint may cause fires

Your West Valley newspaper recently did an article on a recent home fire resulting from a dryer lint and  dryer vent and the damage caused by it “Peoria Fire – Medical responds to dryer fire, reminds people to clean vents”.

More than 15,000 fires are caused by that buildup of lint in those vents yearly, and ProBest Pest management has a air system device to clean those vents. This procedure is simple, we insert a device into the hose area of the dryer vent and the air forces the lint back at us cleaning the hose system. We also recommend installing a metal hose versus the old plastic type you may have. A simple clean out can take care of years of lint and crud build-up. I cleaned mine, it hadn’t been cleaned since I bought the house in 2003 and probably not cleaned since it was built in 1987. It was time and I got almost a full 5 gallon bucket of lint from that build-up.

Rodents aren’t just a problem in NYC, how about Arizona?

Harlem says rats to blame for telephone woes“, you may think they have their issues and yes they do but we also have issues with rodents. There was a issue a year or so ago where rabbits were chewing/gnawing on vehicle wiring and that can be a real headache if you need your car in a hurry.

  • The front incisors of rodents never stop growing, In fact, continuously growing front teeth is a trait shared by all rodents from the tiniest mouse to the largest rodent. Observing  mice & rats who have nothing to gnaw upon, its been found that these incisors can grow up to five inches per year.
  • Rats have strong teeth that allow them to chew through glass, cinderblock, wire, aluminum and lead.
  • Rodents need to chew four to five hours each day just to keep their teeth gnawed down to the point that they are able to eat. If their teeth grow too long they will die of starvation.
  • There is a very high sodium content in electrical and cable wiring. This  makes the wires taste good to the rodents, but can lead to wire failure & is a fire hazard. Check your  home-owner’s insurance policies to see if it covers fire if it is a result of rodents chewing on wires.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

 Dryer Vent Cleaning

Improper dryer vents are a much bigger and more common safety problem. Here are a few tips to keep your clothes dryer running safely and efficiently.

No matter which kind of duct you have, you should have it cleaned regularly. In addition, remove the visible lint from the lint screen each time you use your dryer. This not only will reduce the risk of a fire, but your clothes will dry faster and your dryer will use less energy.

Rodents and fire.

 Rodents and fire.

Rodents cause approximately 20 percent of undetermined fires in the United States each year according to fire experts. Rodents include mice, rats, squirrels and they chew constantly because their teeth are always growing. They have incisor teeth that butt up against each other. They will chew through soft concrete, aluminum, wall boards, and pvc and lead pipes.  Mice move inside in the winter months and prefer to live near the warmth of electrical components. We receive more calls as the weather becomes cooler as mice and rodents attempt to move into homes and businesses. The photo above is a good indication of how fires are started and this rodent was electrocued.

Specialized foaming treatment home sealing

Update and official notice of my Specialized foaming treatment and home sealing…

This is just a reminder of my Specialized foaming treatment and home sealing:

  1. I started home sealing in 2009, I  use specialized foaming treatments and home sealing and telling my stories of the critters I may have come in contact with and because I enjoy it and want to pass along my knowledge of pests.
  2. Many people are good at what they do, I don’t change my own brakes because I don’t know anything about car repair – but I know bugs and I’m very good at it.
  3. This home seal is intended for my customers and anyone else interested in professional pest management.
  4. I tend to pass along information as it occurs in the real world, when someone uses to many bug bombs, or uses a blowtorch to get rid of webs, or the spread of various diseases within a vector like mosquitoes or fleas takes place – such as like Hanta Virus, West Nile Virus etc.
  5. Your home shifts and moves throughout the day, home sealing helps to cover those cracks and crevices that development over time. This also helps save air conditioning or heating costs. The jtrim under the stucco moves as well, foundation and jtrim move away from each other and that allows scorpions access into your home or business.
  6. Have you ever looked in your attic, how much insulation is in there? Are there dropping or open louver doors or windows, there should be a screen in place. Just adding some new insulation may help heating and cooling costs, and advise you of any potential pests issues like birds, bats or critters.
  7. I consider myself a Public Health Pest Management Professional and here to assist you in keeping your family safe from the bugs and pests.
