Dark Shadows (1966 versus 2012)

Dark Shadows (1966 versus 2012) My tribute to blood suckers not much different than Bed Bugs!

I’m really not a fan of movie remakes, they just don’t seem to be of the same caliber as the originals – here are just a few before I get to Dark Shadows.

The Day the Earth Stood Still – (1951) still my all time favorite movie and the version by Keano Reeves (2008) was OK,  just not as good as the original from my point of view. Black and white, Michael Rennie (Klaatu) was just cool and the robot (Gort) – terrifying, yes the 2008 version special effects were great but it just lacked the charisma of the original.

I am Legend a novel – I read it on a plane in 1971 on the way to the 13th World Scout Jamboree in Tokyo, Japan. This novel was later made into a movie “I Am Legend” (2007) with Will Smith – not technically a remake so nothing to relate it to except it didn’t follow the novel as well – I think they call that poetic license.

    OK – I was a huge, we are talking HUGE Dark Shadows fan,  Barnabus Collins – the vampire played by Jonathan Frid died April 13-14, 2012. I would race home from school and watch this show and it scared the absolute out of me, but I had to watch it. With all the talk these days about blood sucking Bed Bugs and the creepy bats to those places where spiders and evil lurk. So I’ll probably see the movie but I’m concerned this will more funny than a serious vampire movie – watch the preview. The movie is set to release May 11, 2012 and I’ll see you there

Arizona – No frost, no ice and no snow = bigger, badder bugs!

I absolutely love living in the south, warmer temperatures and no shoveling snow or slipping on the ice. I did grow up in Ohio and was fortunate enough to have a Cub Cadet lawnmower snow plow to help me avoid work. Yes it’s hotter than hell here in Arizona during the summer months but gladly I will endure the HEAT versus the cold and snow. The best thing for a bug guy is that the bugs seldom die and this year we didn’t have any real cold and frigid weather to speak of.

So guess what, yep the bugs are going to be out if force this year. So what does that mean for the average homeowner? The crickets and feeder bugs, you know the kind of bugs that scorpions love to eat – are going to be huge… Bark Scorpions eat small insects, spiders and sometimes other scorpions depending on conditions. They feed at night and often hang out on retaining or block walls which hold the Arizona heat. The idea here is to identify, reduce the numbers and where they live, stop them from getting in and pesticides if needed.

Spring is almost here, at least in Arizona and soon we will heading to those wonderful 120° temperatures. So the BIG question are you ready for Spring Cleaning? Here are a few tips on preparing for the summer heat ahead of us all.

  1. Check all out building for pests, like bees or termites.
  2. Check the eaves of your home for bees and cracks in which bugs hide.
  3. The Spring is a great time to caulk and seal your home against unwanted pests, it’s cooler and we all know we don’t want to do it in the Summer.
  4. Check for any nesting around the home, rodents and birds use nesting material and will often drag it in through opening in the walls and ceilings.
  5. Use a cobweb broom to knock down interior dust webs.
  6. Trim those trees from against the home.
  7. Never stack firewood or wood against the home.
  8. Clean your carpets.

What nonsense? Just trying to be Patriotic!

Yesterday was the 100th Centennial of Arizona and ProBest decided to offer FREE CAKE to our customers coming to our Contract U.S. Post Office, we also decided to purchase shirts with the logo and to decorate the front office and put balloons on our signs offering FREE CAKE.

This is the first time ever that we put up balloons and this just strikes me funny, in this economy you would think that the City would encourage business (we do sell stuff in our DIY store) and which we also include sales tax. Mr. Hall walked in and handed the note and said take the balloons down, he didn’t ask any questions just the note and a brochure on the law.

I don’t want to create any BIG issues here but PLEEEEEEEASE!

So who will survive December 21, 2012?

The Mayan Calendar indicates or at least ends on that date, really the Mayan’s indicated a change. So whatever that is I’m sure we will adapt. But it got me to thinking about who would survive and you know it will be the bugs.

The insects have been around forever – What is the Evolutionary History of Insects?  Written By: Michael Anissimov  The evolutionary history of insects, like that of many other invertebrate groups, is poorly understood. For many decades, it was thought that they branched off of millipedes and centipedes, which are known to have colonized the land as early as 428 million years ago, during the Silurian period. But recent genetic studies suggest that insects more likely split off from crustaceans sometime around 410 million years ago. However, thanks to the high oxygen levels of the Carboniferous period, about 320 million years ago, some insects grew to huge sizes, such as the griffinfly Meganeura, which had a two foot wingspan. But when oxygen levels went down, these insects promptly died due to an inability to circulate sufficient oxygen through their bodies.
