Aprehend Bed Bug

Aprehend® Bed Bug – Fungal spores biopesticide – natural fungal disease new technology. When the bug comes into contact with a treated surface, the fungal spores stick to its feet and body and are taken back to its harborage areas. The spores transfer easily between bed bugs by direct contact, targeting bed bugs that do not leave the harborage area. After 24 hours, the spores will germinate, like seeds, and penetrate directly through the cuticle of the bed bug. Once inside, the fungal disease grows in the blood system, killing the bed bug with 3-10 days.

The fungus in Aprehend® is called Beauveria bassiana GHA. It is highly effective against bed bugs. Biopesticides are usually inherently less toxic than conventional pesticides. Biopesticides generally affect only the target pest and closely related organisms. In contrast to broad spectrum, conventional pesticides that may affect organisms as different as birds, insects, and mammals. Convenient for businesses as well.

The EPA summary on risk to human health is as follows:

When applied as a pesticide to control bed bugs indoors, EPA concludes that use of Beauveria bassiana GHA will not result in unreasonable adverse effects to humans.

The Aprehend® SDS uses the signal word ‘Danger’ because some of the components of the oil formulation are ‘Petroleum Distillates.’ These products should not be inhaled. For this reason, respiratory protection must be worn during application of Aprehend® and residents and pets should not re-enter areas where application has taken place for 4 hours. This ensures that all spray droplets have settled and no longer pose an inhalation risk.

How do you get bed bugs?

Bed bugs need to be introduced into an environment. They do not jump or fly but are excellent hitch-hikers and can be transported on clothing, luggage, used furniture and various other objects. Risk for bed bug exposure increases in several of the following situations:

Purchasing or using second-hand furniture and mattresses
Entertaining or being an overnight guest
Staying in hotels, college dormitories, boarding schools
Children coming home from summer camp

Traveling BedBugs

Watch out when traveling:

Bedbugs are traveling about all the time, but during those periods when we travel more we actually hear about them more often as well. So pay attention and if you suspect them in your room, ask to move across the hotel. Don’t place you luggage on bed or on chairs, I place mine in the bathroom, far far away from any place where they might hide. When you return home, undo the luggage in the garage or back porch. No sense bringing them into your home – cause that will bring on added $$$$$$ for treatment. Health Checks – Well it’s that time of year, school is out and traveling begins. Whether at home or traveling for summer vacation, bedbugs could be a key concern. Although named for their habit of feeding on human hosts in bed. They can be found in all types of locations and items. To promote public awareness and to help avoid issues, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has declared June 4-10, 2017 as BedBug Awareness Week. ProBest Pest Management is joining NPMA in this important public education effort by sharing common signs of a bed bug infestation to keep an eye out for this summer.

“Just like people enjoy traveling in the summer months, so do bed bugs, and they love using personal belongings like suitcases, boxes and shoes as a hiding place, just to be near a food supply,” said Keith V. Birkemeyer aka Dr. Bug, at ProBest Pest Management in Gilbert, Arizona. “With these biting pests being easily transported, it’s important to know the top signs of an infestation. Concerns

Dr Bug shares the following signs and symptoms of a possible bed bug infestation:

Small red to reddish brown fecal spots on mattresses, upholstery or walls
Molt bed bug skins, their white, sticky eggs or empty eggshells
Red, itchy bite marks, especially on the legs, arms and other body parts exposed while sleeping
Very heavily infested areas may have a characteristically sweet odor

“During the summer, travel increases and so does the likelihood of encountering bed bugs. We strongly encourage the public to take extra precautions to avoid encounters with these biting pests,” added Dr. Bug.”

News about Bed bugs and pesticides

News is showing research that bed bugs are adapting to pesticide usage and they might be thickening their skins to avoid the pesticide. Every day we are learning more and more about what is happening in the way of bedbugs, some cities are

“Bed bugs are becoming resistant to some Insecticides”

or “Cuticle Thickening in a Pyrethroid-Resistant strain of Common Bed Bug”

The EPA is deciding on reducing pesticide usage, what and if they decide to reduce some pesticides can influence what is used and when. It may be that in the future we will be limited to newer products.

Bedbugs and hotels, did you know this?

I used to travel a lot and I’m guilty of letting the maids skip my room, I thought it would allow them to go home earlier. So this recent article made me smarter about a hotel stay. “Five myths about hotel housekeeping”

Obviously I’m making a point about one of the myths and that is that the Bedbug scare is over – people are taking more precautions but those pesky little bugs are still out there.

Disease in Bed Bugs?

Disease and my favorite bug is in the news once again – The Kissing Bug, apparently the dreaded Bedbug may now transmit a similar disease carried by the Kissing Bug.

In a study published online this week in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, senior author Michael Z. Levy, PhD, assistant professor in the department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, and researchers at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Peru conducted a series of laboratory experiments that demonstrated bi-directional transmission of T. cruzi between mice and bed bugs.

So if you live in the South I highly recommend making sure your screens are in place, wear repellent when hiking an if you have horses or cattle keep an eye out for the Kissing Bugs

and

If traveling store your suitcase or luggage in the bathroom until you make an inspection of your hotel room, don’t accept or purchase furniture with inspecting it as well.

Tricky BedBugs

Damn BedBugs, they are sneaky and will hide in any hole or crevice. Click on the picture and see if you can find the bedbugs in the hole. What should you look for if you think you have an infestation:

Red or black spots on bedding material.
Adult Bedbugs are the size of a apple seed, babies are much smaller and see through.
Smell of iron (result of blood).
Don’t just look at the bed check the cracked paint, wallpaper, any crevices in wood or holes in computer desk.

Checking waterbeds for BedBugs

Well I have to say you learn a lot here in the field, when checking a waterbed it is important to completely take the bed apart. Every square inch of the bed needs to be taken apart and carefully inspected for bugs.

Draft of Federal Bed Bug Strategy
