Arizona – No frost, no ice and no snow = bigger, badder bugs!

Arizona – No frost, no ice and no snow = bigger, badder bugs!

I absolutely love living in the south, warmer temperatures and no shoveling snow or slipping on the ice. I did grow up in Ohio and was fortunate enough to have a Cub Cadet lawnmower snow plow to help me avoid work. Yes it’s hotter than hell here in Arizona during the summer months but gladly I will endure the HEAT versus the cold and snow. The best thing for a bug guy is that the bugs seldom die and this year we didn’t have any real cold and frigid weather to speak of.

So guess what, yep the bugs are going to be out if force this year. So what does that mean for the average homeowner? The crickets and feeder bugs, you know the kind of bugs that scorpions love to eat – are going to be huge… Bark Scorpions eat small insects, spiders and sometimes other scorpions depending on conditions. They feed at night and often hang out on retaining or block walls which hold the Arizona heat. The idea here is to identify, reduce the numbers and where they live, stop them from getting in and pesticides if needed.

Spring is almost here!

  Spring is almost here!

Spring is almost here, at least in Arizona and soon we will heading to those wonderful 120° temperatures. So the BIG question are you ready for Spring Cleaning? Here are a few tips on preparing for the summer heat ahead of us all.

  1. Check all out building for pests, like bees or termites.
  2. Check the eaves of your home for bees and cracks in which bugs hide.
  3. The Spring is a great time to caulk and seal your home against unwanted pests, it’s cooler and we all know we don’t want to do it in the Summer.
  4. Check for any nesting around the home, rodents and birds use nesting material and will often drag it in through opening in the walls and ceilings.
  5. Use a cobweb broom to knock down interior dust webs.
  6. Trim those trees from against the home.
  7. Never stack firewood or wood against the home.
  8. Clean your carpets.
  9. How about some plumbing spring cleaning – here are some tips from Benjamin Franklin Plumbing

Don’t throw away furniture because of Bed Bugs!

Don’t throw away furniture because of Bed Bugs!

I know they are creepy and the mere mention of the word strikes fear in many, don’t respond to PANIC! I have watched these shows on TV like “Infested” and you don’t have to throw away all your furniture. Don’t panic, think it through and create a plan of attack. Here are a few of my rules when it comes to Bed Bugs!

  1. I’ll say it again, don’t panic. Look for them or evidence of them – IDENTIFY them first!
  2. Think about how they got there, did someone travel or did you have guest over?
  3. Don’t start taking the furniture outside or moving it from room to room – you may spread the problem.
  4. If someone is being bitten, isolate the area (example) if they are being bitten on the right side by the knee – check out that area of the room not just the bed but I would start there.
  5. My personal opinion is this is something that you shouldn’t do yourself (by the way NO BUG BOMBS please) I think it just makes them go deeper into a crack or crevice trying to get away from the pesticide. This often leads to creating a harder treatment program for the Professional.
  6. OK you have Bed Bugs and you called a Pro, follow their Prep Sheet – the more you participate the better and faster the program will work. Vacuuming is very important, just make sure to empty the bag or container. Many years ago a homeowner had fleas and used the vacuum, didn’t empty the bag and the eggs hatched in the closet. There were 1000’s of fleas in that closet and trying to get out into the home, empty the vacuum you’ll thank me later!

These bugs are tiny, elusive and very difficult to get rid of but not impossible. As I said and I will say it again “Don’t Panic” and don’t give up. If you have any questions you can always send me an for my opinion [email protected]

My favorite books…

My favorite books…

I enjoy history and geography, so my tastes lean to this genre…

The American Plague” by Molly Caldwell Crosby – Yellow Fever the epidemic that shaped our history

Another favorite is “The Jungle” mainly due to history about the meatpacking industry and it lead to the FDA (thank goodness). Have you ever noticed bugs in your cereal?

I also enjoy reading John Grisham, Dan Brown and Clive Cussler.

100th Aniversary of Arizona

100th Aniversary of Arizona:

February 14th, 2012

In honor of the event I decided to use a little information I found at AAA magazine Highroads “A Century of Statehood” this maganize is always full of great road trips and fun for the entire family. So please check out this edition and I going to ask a few questions to see if anyone can guess the answers:

  1. What made the dent 570 feet deep in the earth near Flagstaff?

2. The world’s largest exposure of petrified trees is in what park? And no they are not standing! (You know who I’m talking about!)

3. What town is to tough to die?

OK here is the deal, if you think you know the answer give me a comment, if not check out” A Century of Statehood” and you can also check out our previous home seal “Celebrations Begin – Arizona’s 100th anniversary…
