Have you watched those shows where the dogs finds the Porcupine?

This story immediately reminded me of that nightmare both for the dog, the owners oh and I guess the Porcupine too. “This rodents eats with needles” So to start this debate are Woodrats related to Pack Rats and the answer is yes. Pack rats are often called woodrats, pack rats build nests or middens and can collect quite the trove of neat stuff.

I didn’t know this but the cactus with the spines have a  higher protein content.

Kohl and his colleagues believe that the rodent is choosing spines over an easier meal because the flesh of spiny cacti generally has a higher protein content and less fiber compared with naturally non-spiny cacti. In that sense, the woodrats are using the spines almost as a simple nutrition label.

Tough day, nobody wants me…

So I arrived to do a termite inspection and was laughing as I left. I don’t think they missed much on their list. Except thin mints – still laughing…

See any they missed, comment below.

Did you know they have bugs in the Antarctic?

Ohio State scientists say tiny Antarctic insect has smallest genome of insects so far.” I have a friend that owns a pest control company in Alaska and does his fair share of pest control – by plane of course. That is to say that they often have to travel by plane just to reach the facility or what have you to service.

I have seen  midges especially in the summer just attacking anything that has warm blood. But these little midges spends 2 years in its larval stage frozen in the ice and amazingly can turn off 25% of its genes when it hibernates. WOW, is about all I can say.

Do you have Solar on your roof?

Those pesky pigeons just won’t quit will they? You decided to upgrade and put Solar on the home and know they have taken up under the Solar panels. This is the fix to getting those birds off your roof. Once pigeons have decided to make your roof their home they won’t ever give up unless you make them move.

Why won’t pigeons leave?

  1. They are generational – if born on your roof they will continue to think of your home as their home.
  2. They want and need the same things you and I want – food, water and shelter.
  3. They prefer to have their backs against a wall, gives them an advantage over birds of prey.

Have you ever really read the can or label, before you sprayed?

I think that most people just grab the can and spray and since I’m in the biz, I just wanted to make sure everyone is aware of how dangerous that is. Look at all the stories about people that Do It Yourself (DIY) and almost blow themselves or their family/neighbors into the next world. For example what if the product contained a petroleum  solvent which could explode or cause damage to other products or surfaces.

Story time – I remember sometime ago when I first learned how to use my favorite pest control tool, the bellows duster. I was dusting a wall outlet and in those days, the duster was made out of metal – apparently I got to close to the terminals and almost electrocuted myself. I learned a valuable lesson – I installed a plastic small hose to the end – that won’t happen again. The lesson here is that I was able to learn from that experience, what would have happened if I had inserted a spray into a void and there was flame – boom. I could have killed myself, so I’m thankful it was just sparks and a jolt.

So please read and understand the product you are using, I want you to be safe and grow old.

Ouch, can this happen at your home or business?

A friend of mine on FaceBook – Ernesto Luis Verbauwen posted this picture the other day and I just had to repost it on my home seal – so thanks to Ernesto.  Ernesto works at Fumigaciones San Lorenzo in Concoria, Entre Rios.

I just really love the fact that as pest control operators we can all get along and share useful tips and facts to help one another.

Which according to my research Bogata, Colombia. Bogotá formally Bogotá, Capital District, from 1991 to 2000 called Santafé de Bogotá, is the capital, and largest city, of Colombia. It is also designated by the national constitution as the capital of the department of Cundinamarca, though the city of Bogotá now comprises an independent capital district

In “Rodents will gnaw on anything, what happens if its your home“, we looked at 20% of homes in US possibly the number of fires by rodents. Scary, I think so! What if it were your home or business. Some wildlife outside is OK, but I would say none inside. So home-seal and keep them out and hey if you’re in Concoria give my friend a call, I’m sure he will treat you right.

Rodents – why are they scary?

Did you know Rodents encompass 43% of all mammals on earth, the mouse is #2 and Norway rat is #3.

There are about 4260 species of mammals known on this planet at the moment, though taxonomists are still arguing and species are still being found.

Diseases directly transmitted by rodents (thanks to the CDC)
