Bug Control

So at this point if you have read any of my previous posts, you know I’m a BIG fan of IPM and Schools should really be using this program. So how do I investigate before I propose for a bug control service.

I always check with the customer, what are they seeing, how many and when are they seeing them?
Then I preform an inspection.
- I carry a flashlight, mirrors and tools so I can get into areas and under things like sheds etc.
- Transfer my notes to proposal sheet.
Discuss options with the owner.
- Is it insect pest or rodents, could be an issue outside with the shed or honeybees on exterior of home.
- If it is rodents discuss what rodent stations look like and how they work, snap traps may also be involved.
- I usually draw a graph, mandatory with termite but also good on pigeon work that needs to be done.

I have run into some problems especially in the Sun City, Surprise area of some Pest Control companies that either don’t issue a proposal before the work and/or jack up prices as they arrive to do the work. Alleyways

Alleyways, side streets all pose a risk of trash buildup, which allows all kinds of scavengers a chance to feed. Birds, opossums, raccoons, rodents and feral animals will somehow always find a way to get the food. Pests including cockroaches, flies, earwigs and ants will find the food and carry it away. All in all its better to keep the areas clean, but we know our neighbors, right? We also know that all of these pest pose a significant threat to the Public Health, they carry disease and other pathogens. These pathogens can cause stomach issues and affect us in many ways. Don’t get me started on flies, yuuuuuck. One minute in the garbage the next on your steak – throwing up and licking it up. Did I mention yuuuuuuuck. Even in the winter here, those bins can be nasty.

So what can we do?

Keep those areas clean, clean them frequently. Even if your not in an alleyway, keep it clean.
Keep the garbage lids down.
Recycle what you can, food can go into earth type recyclable bins and later into gardens.
I suggest bagging it, they have recyclable bags as well.
There are products like fly bags (they smell but if in alleyway its better) there are baits and things you can use near the trash sites.
Remember that fly can be in your house super fast, while it might take a few hours for the roach to make it there.

Rodent entrys

Rodent entrys and WHY should you be concerned? Mice and or rodents can cause significant problems in many ways and we will discuss them all.

Allergens – caused by feces and urine, mice constantly urinate as they run.
Bite – yes they can and do bite.
Damage – yes they can cause extensive damage to wood, insulation and stuff.
They are also known carriers of salmonella and other bacteria.

Rodent entrys pose issues and I’ve probably have said it a 100 times, check your property monthly. This way nothing should get by you, like a raccoon moving into your shed. Or bees developing a hive that is huge in a tree or under hang area of your house. I hate surprises so knowing what is happening at your place. Whether home or business is crucial to living at your place. No one wants to walk out your door and be attacked by bees, living in a water meter box but it does happen. Look up, look down and check it all from the roofline to the base and check out the back yard and in the front. If you have regular pest control, the technician may bring to your attention anything they notice. I have many times found something either under a crawlspace or yard that needs attention. Mice Control

No matter what you do they will sneak in and gain access into your place. It can be the dreaded rat or mouse, and once in they are tough to chase out. You may see bits of chewed paper, or plastic in an attic area. You may smell fecal or urine smells or maybe even the odor of death.

Snakes

The snakes are out and now is the time to watch where you step or put your hands. We put out a lot of rodent stations, black in color and the snakes love the heat and protection. They also occasionally get a treat when a mouse or rat stumbles in. So lets imagine that you’ve seen some rat feces or maybe a rat. Why should you be concerned? Not only will they try to get into your home but they carry diseases and parasites like ticks. Most of us have pets, like cats and dogs and rats can cause real issues even biting our pets. So with rats comes snakes, when rats are plentiful in a neighborhood snakes are often found. The snake below was found at a customers home near the pool area, can you only imagine what might happen?

Essential Services – In response to the Covid-19 virus

Essential Services and their providers are the FrontLine of defense to Pest Control.This virus has certainly made people think, maybe those Preppers were right? Maybe we all need to think about – what if? The President, Governor of Arizona all have weighed in and set guidelines and protocols to the Pandemic. So why is Pest Control an Essential Service?

We are the Protectors of Public Health!

As you quarantine in place, we continue to serve your home or business. I never in all my days ever thought this day would come, yet here it is. The scorpions, ticks, mosquitoes, and rodents will not go away on their own. They will continue to be a constant threat against our lives. While many carry diseases, we are the force needed to stop them. We have the tools and knowledge to keep them at bay. The key in my mind is knowledge, anyone can spray but do they know the enemy? There are numerous pesticides on the market one even touts yearly protection – if that was true I would use the stuff. The pesticides are mixed with water, put down wet which dry and children and pets can then come in contact with these pesticides. Once dry they can become airborne and nobody needs to breath that over time. Most all work can be done from the outside, this requires more time. These days pesticides have come a long way, only certain pests like German Roaches require inside treatment (can be done with specific pesticides such as dry baits or gels). Ants can also be treated with baits. Bed bugs are a different story but these days there are fungal spores ready to annihilate the blood suckers.

Snakes & Rodents

Well it’s that time of the year for snakes to become a tad more adventuresome . They are looking for food and may be drawn into your property following their food. They like ground squirrels, rodents and smaller game. So, much like scorpions and their food, it is important to keep an eye out for rodent activity leading to snake activity.

Remember snakes are venomous versus poisonous, they bite and that is the difference. Anything that bites, injects is venomous while things like Poison Ivy is poisonous – if you eat it etc.

Snakes provide a real service by keeping the population of rodents in check. Many people would argue but even rattlesnakes have their place – as long as its not near or in your home. Screw me

Screw me, have you ever had a day when all goes against you? Even the rats are out to get me. It was a sign – have you ever had a rat bring you a present in the rodent station? OK I’m just kidding, I don’t think they are that smart or maybe they are? I’ve had rats that are trap shy so you have to be clever with them.

Ways to keep the rats out.

1. Check your home frequently for holes, rub marks (rats have oily fur).

2. Pick up fruit daily, see f you notice teeth marks.

3. Check areas of pool pumps and ac units for rat poop.

4. Pay attention to noises coming from attic or roof.

5. If your neighbors mention rodents, take care. They will not go away on their own, they require food and water and will stay in an area.

Bite marks

Bite marks and pipes or wires, what’s the damage from? My first guess is rodents, they love to gnaw things which in turn helps to keep their teeth from growing to long. Don’t wait until they attack your pool pump or air conditioning – I’ve heard that that can cost upwards of $350 +++++. See the picture and the Bite mark, can it cause a fire, you bet ya? I think fire ants which like vibration maybe rodents are drawn to the noise. Maybe the wires are like the car engines years ago that had a waxy coating from soy on them. Whatever it is they like to gnaw so don’t let them destroy your car or pumps.
