Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, complete information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods (I read several magazines each month on new products), is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.

In part, as a gold member of the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP), ProBest has been recognized for the promotion and adoption of innovative, alternative pest control practices such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

The gold membership is reserved for PESP’s outstanding environmental stewards. As a member, ProBest has demonstrated commitment to pesticide risk reduction; making us a leader and example for other PESP members. Gold members develop an IPM strategy, demonstrate significant and sustained progress in reducing pesticide risks, and independently measure the progress of their IPM implementation.

ProBest’s Inspiration

Many, many years ago Dr. Bug did the business of pest control the same as everyone else. I noticed that after our service the pesticide mixture (prepared as a liquid with a type of wettable powder) applied wet, would dry, and leave a powder residue. Children, pets, and adults walked or crawled through this powder; I knew that we had to be safe. That is the point where I concluded that outside service was the new way; or at least the way I would head with ProBest. I joined two Groups. #1 The Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program 2010 as a Gold Member and I joined the University of Arizona Committee of Pesticide Education about 2013 later disbanded and I joined the IPM team. Most of my work, blogs, and training have surrounded my philosophy of Integrated Pest Management.

So how does our Integrated Pest Management process work?

At ProBest Pest Management, we always start with an inspection. Our philosophy is to identify first, then we decide on a plan. We do not power spray yards unless we are talking ticks, as that would be a waste of pesticide and overkill. With the use of a backpack sprayer, we target the pests, judiciously spot treating those areas known to harbor bugs, termites, rodents, and such.

Targeting pests with dust, webber (knockdown webs), granular for ants and other pests, and liquid around the home and any block walls. Since I am somewhat of a nerd, OCD guy – I like to find new chemistry to attack the bugs before they get in your home or business. For example, there are new baits for cockroaches but are wet and I like the bait Avert – dry bait. So, the wet dries out very quickly while the dry bait remains active forever unless it gets wet. I am always on the lookout for new chemistry which would be better for my customer; family and pets.
