The appliance and the hole.

The appliance and your home. It’s the hole that affects the entry of the pests. Often the wall socket is surrounded by the cover but may still allow pests. The cover may fit tightly but the technique is to fill in that gap with caulking. By sealing the outside, you stop the pests outside. But if there is a gap and they encounter it they may get in. Home-sealing is still the best option and helps to add one more line of defense against the possible invasion of pests.

Home-sealing eliminates the holes or crack that scorpions, ants and spiders may take into your home. You can do your own sealing or hire a professional company to do it. It is better to be done in the winter if you you-re doing it as it HOT and messy. You can do the inside any ole time and its easy enough to do, pull the cover down or off and caulk.

Pesticides

Pesticides are a tool of the IPM or Integrated Pest Management. It is important to understand and implement the correct usage of any chemical used. I recently attended a workshop where this subject was addressed especially with the idea of IPM or Integrated Pest Management. Always a great idea to rehash the options you have when using them. I have always believed that IPM works and should be the basis of any pest treatment. I also wish to address the belief of some that IPM means no pesticides, that is incorrect it simply means that you use the other tools first and if you must use them you do so in a manner that is minimally evasive to the structure.

Spider webs

Spider webs and spiders

Spider webs are the worst, you’re walking through the woods and boom – spider web. You’re in crawlspace and boom spider web. You’re in your garage and you are looking for a tool and you encounter a spider web – freaks you out. Yep, been there. Black Widow webs are crinkly and most often in a complete mess in direction. Sometimes you will find a egg sac and sometimes even the mama upside down just hanging out waiting to bite you. (They don’t do that).

Wear gloves ALWAYS when you are doing yard-work or working in garage.

When you’re hiking in the wood carry a stick ahead of you, by the way this also serves as a bear stick – I’m kidding.

Keep your garage area tidy, less chance for spiders to pop up.

Keep doors and windows closed and door trim in place.

Hoarding collecting

Hoarding collecting, clutter, junk, trash or just way to much stuff. The problem with this is often the amount collected. To much often hides other issues like cockroaches and rodents. With filth comes secondary pest infestation, after cockroaches and rodents may come parasites and flies. If you know me at all, flies are the biggest yuck factor.

This disease is known as compulsive hoarding by excessive acquisition (collecting). And an inability or unwillingness to discard large quantities of objects that cover the living areas of the home and cause significant distress or impairment. I’ve only had to deal with once so far, a mobile home packed to the gills and impossible to actually get under control without a significant clean-up.

Need a Professional opinion? Client of yours has a pest issue? A true story from this last week I had a realtor ring me at home at 8:20 am, she had a concern about a relative in a group home and bedbugs. Now here is the best part, I don’t care what you call me as long as you call me. A year or two back I had a Property Manager call on a Sunday. She had tried to reach her pest company and no one would call her back. She called me I answered and took care of the bees that same day a Sunday.

If you know me I don’t mind those concerns as long as they are legit and you’re not trying to sell me something. If you have my card my cell number is on it. Some people say OMG really, yep Really. If you need me I’m available, again legit only and not after 9pm or before 8am unless the rat has you cornered or the honeybees are at your front door trying to get in.

Mosquito Dunks

Mosquito dunks and how to use them. I thought this was a great idea. First off they contain No Poison. They are based on the naturally occurring bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, var. israelensis, or Bti. It is considered to be one of the most environmentally sensitive mosquito and blackfly larvicides used in mosquito control. Made with Bt-israelensis (Bt-i), a highly specific biological pesticide, this product represent a major breakthrough for people and the environment when compared with the traditional toxic chemical approach to mosquito control. Will NOT harm people, pets, wildlife or fish. One note I will make is that the time to kill mosquitoes is when they are in the larvae and pupa stage, in the water.

The mosquito female finds the water, lays her eggs and then when they hatch the oil does its job, death to the wigglers.

Aprehend Bed Bug

Aprehend® Bed Bug – Fungal spores biopesticide – natural fungal disease new technology. When the bug comes into contact with a treated surface, the fungal spores stick to its feet and body and are taken back to its harborage areas. The spores transfer easily between bed bugs by direct contact, targeting bed bugs that do not leave the harborage area. After 24 hours, the spores will germinate, like seeds, and penetrate directly through the cuticle of the bed bug. Once inside, the fungal disease grows in the blood system, killing the bed bug with 3-10 days.

The fungus in Aprehend® is called Beauveria bassiana GHA. It is highly effective against bed bugs. Biopesticides are usually inherently less toxic than conventional pesticides. Biopesticides generally affect only the target pest and closely related organisms. In contrast to broad spectrum, conventional pesticides that may affect organisms as different as birds, insects, and mammals. Convenient for businesses as well.

The EPA summary on risk to human health is as follows:

When applied as a pesticide to control bed bugs indoors, EPA concludes that use of Beauveria bassiana GHA will not result in unreasonable adverse effects to humans.

The Aprehend® SDS uses the signal word ‘Danger’ because some of the components of the oil formulation are ‘Petroleum Distillates.’ These products should not be inhaled. For this reason, respiratory protection must be worn during application of Aprehend® and residents and pets should not re-enter areas where application has taken place for 4 hours. This ensures that all spray droplets have settled and no longer pose an inhalation risk.

How do you get bed bugs?

Bed bugs need to be introduced into an environment. They do not jump or fly but are excellent hitch-hikers and can be transported on clothing, luggage, used furniture and various other objects. Risk for bed bug exposure increases in several of the following situations:

Purchasing or using second-hand furniture and mattresses
Entertaining or being an overnight guest
Staying in hotels, college dormitories, boarding schools
Children coming home from summer camp

A few Facts.

All scorpions are venomous but only about 25 species are known to have venom capable of killing a human being. We only have one in Arizona that is a concern however there have been no deaths attributable is some time.
Termites were once classified in a separate order from cockroaches, but recent phylogenetic studies indicate that they evolved from close ancestors of cockroaches during the Jurassic or Triassic.
New reproductive termites are winged, and able to fly. This is the time when most people think they are ants, but unlike ants they have straight antenna and no pinched waist.
Scorpions are known to be one of the oldest animals on earth, 430 million years ago and emerged from the Oceans.
Arachnophobia is the fear of Spiders. It is one of the most common fears in the world. It probably affects about 10% of men and 50% of women.
Houseflies existed 65 million years ago! I hate flies!
In Arizona we have wind scorpions or the Arizona sun spider, these eight-legged creatures aren’t technically spiders at all.
Boxelder bugs can congregate on buildings and home, they are a real threat except to some plants and the best measure to keeping them out is home seal and vacuum when they do get inside.
