Whose coming to your picnic?

Whose coming to your picnic?

So you spend all day planning this picnic, you spend all day making sandwiches and all that goes with it – you don’t want pests showing up uninvited. So what can you except in the way of pests?

Ants – well we all know what happens when you spill some food, the ants come ing in to steal your picnic food.

Bees, wasps and hornets – one lone bee or wasp finds the source of the food and they go back home to tell everyone else.

Flies – nothing more disgusting than flies, trust me on this one.  fly

Have you ever heard of Edward O. Wilson?

Have you ever heard of Edward O. Wilson?

To a bug guy like myself – he is the man!

Edward Wilson is an American biologist, researcher (sociobiology, biodiversity), naturalist (conservationist) and author. His specialty is myrmecology, the study of ants, on which he is considered to be the world’s leading authority. “He found that living insects, such as bees and wasps, have a complex hierarchy, with strict rules governing who reproduces, who gets food, and who defends the colony.”  He is often considered to be “The Father of Socialbiology” – the study of both social behavior and organization of all kinds of animals.

Do you know why sprays don’t always work on ants?

Do you know why sprays don’t always work on ants?

What you see isn’t anything compared to what is below the surface. So if you decide to spray, you will only kill the ones in direct contact with the pesticide.  It is important to kill the Queen ant, when she is dead you will have accomplished the task at hand. Death to the entire colony.

My favorite for this job is TerroPCO, which we carry at our office.

Bugs tremble at the sound of my name “Dr. Bug”  ProBest Pest Management

I’m not kidding, I live in Phoenix and have only seen four bugs in my house in the last 10 years.  Two American Cockroaches, one in master bathroom shower and one downstairs. One beetle (no idea what kind)  but it was trying to hide in an electrical outlet cover and some black ants. Not bad but just the mere presence scares these bugs enough, that they know not to mess with the “James Bond” of pest control. A customer just last week called to complain of bugs and by the time I walked in they were all dead. Hahaha – maybe it’s my new thing, no pest control just (IPM)  Integrated Pest Management without any pesticides. Just me wishing the bugs DEAD.

Just another reason to call ProBest Pest Management 602-249-7378, I know what you are thinking why call when I should call you – I’m not Physic…. Just really good at my job!

Happy Thanksgiving

From ProBest Pest Management to all of our friends across the USA – wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh and of course watch out for the bugs…..

Harvester Ants…

Harvester Ants…

Harvester Ants –  OK I’ve never been stung by this ant but they say this is the ant to avoid. People compare the sting of the Red Imported Fire Ant and still rank the Harvester as the nastiest little stinger of the pair. This ant is quite noticeable due to the large area of vegetation that is cleared away. They gather seeds and will eat other insects. There was a nest of this ant up north that whenever I visited I would bring sunflower seeds and one year the nest was gone. Probably moved on or got destroyed.

Carpenter Ants!

Carpenter Ants!

Can you identify the life-cycle present in this picture? Well I think I see larva, pupa and adults, I don’t see any eggs. I was at a cabin in New Mexico and spotted these Carpenter Ants under a piece of wood. The next day they had decided to move on and I couldn’t locate them. These are officially my nemesis – in Florida they caused me the most aggravation. They can enter homes in a variety of sneaky ways, including telephone or cable lines.  But outside they are a large ant and will excavate wood to make a home.

No self respecting Bug would Dare – enter my home, or would they?

No self respecting Bug would Dare – enter my home, or would they?

Well it finally happened, the ants came ing into my kitchen Saturday. In my 10 years at this home in Phoenix I’ve only had a few little bugs make their way into the realm of the “Bug Guy”. A few years ago an American Roach had made it’s way into my shower and another had made it’s way into my kitchen but not bad for 10 years. Saturday I got up to make some coffee and there they were on the window sill and counter, trying to make their way into the bag of garbage there. Luckily enough for me I had some TerroPCO to stop them in their tracks. I think I created the issue, we were moving the stone from the back yard to the side and it’s a little higher than it should be, but my goal is to remove it completely and replace it with wood chips or bark.

Now I know what you are thinking – didn’t the ants know better than to come to a house of someone licensed to kill (bugs only)? I think they temporarily lost sight of the real facts, just because there is food handy – its not always free. No free entitlements here at my home, especially to any wayward pests!

They were Black Fire Ants and they were just looking for food, the best way to combat any ants that make their way into your home is to identify and then treat. I decided to try the TerroPCO first and they readily started feeding on it and within 2 days they were gone. You can’t just spray them, this may kill the surface ones but will never solve the problem. You must get to the source and that is the Queen ant, she lays the eggs and you must kill her and the easiest method is for the foragers to take the food home to share.

Termite Season is here in Arizona – what do you look for?

Termite Season is here in Arizona – what do you look for?

Well the rains of monsoon have begun along with the huge walls of haboob dust storms, so that means its time for the bugs to come out in force.

So exactly what do you look for:

1. Mud tunnels or tubes on your foundation walls –

2. Maybe you haven’t seen any tunnels or tubes outside but you notice something coming down from the ceiling.

3. It is unusual but I have seen it – but termites do swarm! So maybe you have seen a few flying things – what is the difference between an ant and termite?
