Traveling BedBugs

Watch out when traveling:

Bedbugs are traveling about all the time, but during those periods when we travel more we actually hear about them more often as well. So pay attention and if you suspect them in your room, ask to move across the hotel. Don’t place you luggage on bed or on chairs, I place mine in the bathroom, far far away from any place where they might hide. When you return home, undo the luggage in the garage or back porch. No sense bringing them into your home – cause that will bring on added $$$$$$ for treatment. If you think that they got into your home ask for an opinion by a qualified professional pest management operator such as ProBest Pest Management – QualityPro since 2005.

Watch the video for more information regarding these little blood suckers – “Sleep tight and don’t let the Bedbugs bite”.

Oh and by the way, this is a job for someone who knows this bug. Don’t do foolish things like spread DE everywhere or use a blowtorch (I know some people have done this). Use common sense and call ProBest at 602-249-7378, this could be the smartest thing you did this whole year.

Bedbug Awareness Week day1

Well it’s that time of year, school is out and the traveling begins. Whether at home or traveling for summer vacation, bedbugs could be a key concern. Although named for their habit of feeding on human hosts in bed, they can be found in all types of locations and items. To promote public awareness and to help avoid infestations, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has declared June 4-10, 2017 as BedBug Awareness Week. ProBest Pest Management is joining NPMA in this important public education effort by sharing common signs of a bed bug infestation to keep an eye out for this summer.

“Just like people enjoy traveling in the summer months, so do bed bugs, and they love using personal belongings like suitcases, boxes and shoes as a hiding place, just to be near a food supply,” said Keith V. Birkemeyer aka Dr. Bug,  at ProBest Pest Management in Gilbert, Arizona. “With these biting pests being easily transported, it’s important to know the top signs of an infestation, so proper precautions can be put in place and to know when it’s time to call a licensed pest control professional such as ProBest 602-249-7378 or call us at 623- 414-0176 to assess the situation.”

Dr Bug shares the following noteworthy signs and symptoms of a possible bed bug infestation:

  • Small red to reddish brown fecal spots on mattresses, upholstery or walls
  • Molt bed bug skins, their white, sticky eggs or empty eggshells
  • Red, itchy bite marks, especially on the legs, arms and other body parts exposed while sleeping
  • Very heavily infested areas may have a characteristically sweet odor

“During the summer, travel increases and so does the likelihood of encountering bed bugs. We strongly encourage the public to take extra precautions to avoid encounters with these biting pests,” added Dr. Bug.”

Creepy and gross Bed Bugs

Bed Bug Population on the Rise, creepy and gross?

Bed Bug Population on the Rise WCJB TV-20

I decided to pass this along, for a couple of reasons. Very informative and right from a University setting. Bed Bug complaints are not going away, we continue to see the numbers rise even out here in Arizona. So as you are watching the video, let me point out a few things to pay attention to.

  1. Notice the size of these crawly blood suckers.
  2. Remember these things are almost invisible at early stages.
  3. The eggs are translucent.
  4. They are excellent hiders.
  5. Don’t just think bed, think around the room.

Bed Bug Awareness Week Bed Bug Facts & Prevention

bedbugweek      Bed Bug Awareness Week Bed Bug Facts & Prevention

As part of National Pest Management Month, PPMA is launching “Bed Bug Awareness Week,” April 22 – 26 to promote public vigilance and provide essential prevention advice about bed bugs in advance of the summer travel season.

Tips Bed Bug Facts

• Bed bugs are found worldwide and are thought to have come to the U.S. from Europe in the 17th century.
• Bed bugs primarily feed  on humans, but they can also feed on warm-‐blooded animals including birds, mice and family pets.
• Adults are just under ¼” long, relatively flat and oval in shape compared to most other insects.
• Bed bugs can lay one to five eggs per day and more than 500 in a lifetime.
• Bed bugs can survive for several months without eating.
• Bed bugs can withstand a wide range of temperatures, from nearly freezing to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Bed bugs draw blood for about five minutes before retreating to digest.
• Bed bug hatchlings are so small they can pass through a stitch-‐hole in a mattress.
• Bed bugs can ingest seven-‐times their own weight in blood, which would be the equivalent of an average-‐sized male drinking
120 gallons of liquid.

Bed Bug Prevention Tips

There are several steps you can take to help prevent bed bugs in your everyday life. Regular bed bug inspections are the best line of defense to help you avoid a bed bug infestation.

Here are some other prevention tips to keep in mind:
• Regularly inspect areas where pets sleep for signs of bed bugs such as pepper-‐like stains, molted bed bug skins and white, sticky eggs.
• Never bring second-‐hand furniture, especially mattresses and box springs, into a home or college dorm without thoroughly examining it for signs of a bed bug infestation.
• At  hotels, thoroughly inspect the entire room before unpacking, including behind the headboard and in furniture. Pull back the
bed sheets and check the mattress seams for pepper-‐like stains that may be evidence of bed bug activity.
• If you suspect an infestation or problem, notify management and change rooms immediately. Be sure the new room is not adjacent
to or directly below or above the possibly infested room.
• Keep suitcases in plastic trash bags or protective covers during a hotel stay to prevent bed bugs from nesting there. Do not put
them on the beds.
• Upon returning home from a trip, inspect all suitcases and other belongings before bringing them into the house.
• Wash all clothes -‐ even those that have not been worn -‐  in hot water and dry them using an extra-‐hot dryer setting.

Now what do you do?

spider

This reminded me of the many things we do and don’t always finish as human beings. We start a project and it goes on forever, you attempt to kill that spider and he falls and you can’t find him. Yuuuuuck, right! The nice thing about this is that I don’t believe spiders or insects in general can remember stuff like this.

Tom Turpin Professor of Entomology at Purdue University has written the following:

“Sensory memory applies to all kinds of animals. But do seemingly mindless creatures such as insects have memories? Scientists say “yes.” Certainly, insects learn. Insects such as butterflies learn the shape of preferred host plant leaves. Honey bees can learn the visual landmarks between the hive and a patch of flowers. Grasshoppers learn to avoid plants that upset their stomachs.”

I Can’t Think About Sex Without Thinking About Bugs”

Now just for the record I’m not promoting her home seal, Rachel Krantz is a freelance writer living in New York City, I just found this one home seal to be insightful yet disgusting  in some ways. I guess I just don’t think bout sleeping in other beds and if I go to a hotel I always check my room bed and sofa.

So take a chance an use caution but its worth the read.
