What’s Bugging You?

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recently did a Infographic on “What’s Bugging you?”

Comments.

Draft of Federal Bed Bug Strategy

“The management of bed bugs continues to pose a major challenge to state and local governments, private industry and the American public. EPA is inviting comment on the draft Federal Strategy on Bed Bugs which provides guidance for how the various levels of government can contribute to minimizing the negative effects of bed bug infestations on human health and the economy.”

Comments open until 9/18/2013 – Bed Bugs are not going away anytime soon. Take a stab (couldn’t help myself) and see if you have any comments.

There are some things you can do on your own, but take caution on termites, bed bugs and Africanized Honeybees.

Are you up for some fun & interesting books?

I want to thank Tosha for picking up some fantastic books that we can give as give-a-ways at our pest control/post office. They are a great read for ages 9+ and I think they help to spread the word about bugs in general.

What worries me?

What worries me the most is when I did a Google and Bing search for  “Do It Yourself (DIY) products for Bed Bugs”  (About 5,710,000 results (0.35 seconds) and Bing 8,900,000 results. There is so much information out there and I want to know who is right and who is wrong? Everybody is an expert these days, well I have to tell you – do your homework and if you need an opinion find someone knowledgeable. Remember the adage “If it sounds to good to be true”. Don’t fall for all these claims, make sure you get all the facts and don’t use things that could hurt you worse. Hire a professional because they know how better pest control helps protect public health and improves our quality of life.

Leave it to the Pros – Find a Local Pest Control Company

When pests find their way indoors, homeowners are often tempted to try and control the problem on their own. However, the truth is that most pests – from bed bugs and termites to wasps and other stinging insects – are better left to professionals. The professionals listed in our exterminator directory have the knowledge, tools, and training to safely and properly eliminate pest infestations. If you are concerned about an infestation on your property, it’s best to hire licensed, local exterminators to assist in proper identification and treatment of the household pest problem.

You’ve heard about dogs used to sniff drugs etc but what about honeybees?

So far I’ve heard about dogs for drugs, termites and bed bugs, pigs for truffles, rats for bombs and now honeybees are being trained to sniff out bombs. I think this is a great idea, and its happening in a place where it is needed. Croatian scientists training bees to detect explosives and landmines, they are training the honeybees to focus on TNT.

Apparently honeybees are able to smell flowers from about 2.7 miles and are equal or better than dogs. Now just for the record I would hate to see dogs used in this mission, I guess it is necessary just like Police dogs but terrible when one gets hurt. By the way I support the intentional injuring or killing of a police dog to that of killing a Police Officer and should be a felony.

Were you aware that May is “National Pet Month”?

Lots of us own pets, from cats to snakes and because of this we can also from time to time get uninvited pests including ticks and other vermin. In Arizona we don’t get fleas very often but we do encounter ticks on a regular basis. So what can you do to stop those infestations from happening to your home.

  1. Don’t leave food out for feral cats, this may bring in other unwanted pests.
  2. If you see holes in the yard check for Pocket gophers, they can damage plants and bring in pests.
  3. Even birds like pigeons can bring in pests, don’t allow them them to live on your roof.
  4. Bats can make your attic a home, seal and block all access into your attic. Bat Bugs can take up residence within your attic and if you get rid of the bats, the Bat Bugs may come into your home space.
  5. Check your pets frequently for signs of fleas or ticks. You can use over the counter medicines but if you do please mention this to your Pest Management Professional – some of those products may contain a similar products and cause an overdose to the pet.
  6. Keep grass or vegetation trimmed around the home.
  7. Don’t become a hoarder, keep debris away from the home and discourage rodent activity.
  8. Never place firewood next to your home, don’t invite rodents or pests near the home. If you use firewood only bring in what you plan on using right away.
  9. If you have rodents, it may lead to snakes. Snakes have to eat so don’t encourage them to come to your house.
  10. Don’t allow water to stand, mosquitoes can bite and transit diseases and parasites to your pets.
