I looked at temples and buildings that had termite damage and hoped that we could preserve those structures. Formosan termites are capable of doing some severe damage if not stopped. The great thing is that technology continues to work toward that goal and people around the world all must work together.

Termites don’t eat concrete or plastics, but they will build over it and many other products. There was a few years ago some type of foam which was filled with concrete and it always worried me as in my opinion it was just a space in which they could build a tube.
Garages are well known for termite activity, I guess when build it is the last concrete poured and who knows want went on after the pretreatment. That story for another day, but I find termites in garages often and this is not always what I find but it is interesting. Since the expansion joint is visible in the garage, this is what you look for when performing a termite inspection. Mud tubes or tunnels coming up the foundation wall into the structure, are often visible unless you have storage against the walls which most people do. So the lesson here is not to obstruct the expansion joint, better said than done since the garage is the catch all of our lives.

I have even seen them in refrigerators, stoves and microwaves. They can also get into restaurants, this can cost the restaurant business revenue and lost of patrons. There are a number of species that can get inside homes including nuisance Pharaoh, Ghost and even Carpenter ants will trail to sweet or protein foods. It is really important to understand the habits of the nuisance critter you are dealing with, in this way you know when they need protein and/or sweets as carbs.

Just when you thought you had heard every story in the book, I have a new one for you. The office staff in the United Kingdom thought there was a dead pigeon or something stinking up the place. So like any responsible person they called in a Pest Company to check their chimney. Ohhhhhh nooooooo – what do you think they found, yep a burglar had tried to get in and got stuck and died. “Pest Control man called called in to check stench in offices found dead burglar wedged in chimney“.
I’ll bet that will be a story to pass along to the Grand-kids, Guess what I found in a chimney once? No not Santa Claus but a burglar….
Tricky termite treatments
Pavers, flagstone and tile always make a termite treatment more difficult. Sometimes it almost impossible, these pavers are in fact put in place with cement or sand. It is possible to drill but it also is worrisome because you might crack the paver. It is essential to the treatment to get the termiticide to the area where the termites may try to get into the home.
I also run across built in cabinets and they pose another obstacle to getting the termiticide to that expansion joint. What other issues do you think we run across on our daily termite treatments and do you have any unusual obstructions at your home or business?
