Human Health

Human health should concern us all, have you ever considered how far we have come? From throwing waste into the streets where everybody walks through it, to kids playing in the streets.

West Nile Virus can be deadly, Arizona has among the highest incidents of this mosquito-transmitted virus. In 2017, 109 confirmed cases resulted in 8 deaths. A University-County (Phoenix metro area) collaboration (supported by CDC) prompted control of 8 mosquito populations carry the virus, reducing disease risk. Published Arizona Pest Management Center.

I consider myself at the front lines of Public Health and Human Health. I also work closely with Arizona Pest Management Center on IPM.

Restaurants and the need 4 pest Control.

Restaurants

The other a friend and myself visited a Pizza Place restaurant, before I even ordered I visited the bathroom. One of the cleanest bathrooms I’ve been in – in my life. That my friends is how I decide if I’m going to eat at a restaurant. Nothing would upset my intestinal track more than a sloppy disgusting dining place.

I’ll tell you another pet peeve, when an owner calls and I say you have to clean before I’ll take the account and when you come back nothing is done. Easy enough for me, I just won’t do the establishment, period. They are never going to be happy and neither will I. Restaurants should be cleaned at the end of each shift, they should then be cleaned weekly and then again on a monthly schedule depending on how busy they are. Each cleaning schedule can and should focus on certain things, again depending on the restaurant.

World Health Day: Stop Disease – Carrying Pests.

We are very fortunate to live in the USA, 3.6 billion people live in areas where the risk of vector-borne diseases are very high. The World Health Organization is promoting this slogan – “small bite, big threat,” Can you think of diseases known to be caused by insects?

  1. Mosquitoes
  2. Ticks
  3. Fleas
  4. Sand Flies
  5. Blackflies
  6. Water snails

www.EndMalariaNow.org is an organization that continues to save people around the world. 250 million people are affected by Malaria each year, every 60 seconds a child dies from malaria.

How does Pest Control relate to Public Health?

Pest Control = is the regulation and/or management of a species defined as a pest, usually because it is perceived to be detrimental to a person’s health, the ecology or the economy.

Public Health =  science and practice of protecting and improving the health of a community, as by preventive medicine, health education, control of communicable diseases, application of sanitary measures, and monitoring of environmental hazards.

We have often talked about the things that have killed more humans than anything else – #1 mosquito = malaria, dengue fever and fleas = bubonic plague.

New data suggest that insect sting allergy is increasing.

So you’ve been lucky, never been attacked or stung by an insect. Is it luck or are you one of those who may die if stung and you just don’t know it yet? “The rise of deadly insect sing allergies: Is there a cure?” published by Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology article by Medical press.

“Insect sting allergy is increasing, affecting five percent of the population. But what much of the population may not understand is that there is something that can be done about it.”

I’m extremely fortunate that I’m not allergic, especially since I’m in the biz?  So here are a few tips:

  1. Just because you see a honeybee doesn’t mean its going to attack. They are out looking for food and probably could care less about you. Unless, unless yes I said that twice you encounter an Africanized Honeybee colony?
  2. Wear light colored clothes while hiking, honeybees are less likely to become aggressive.
  3. Always wear shoes outside, don’t set them by the backdoor. Scorpions and Black widow spiders may make it their new home.
  4. If you are stung, watch the symptoms – if you feel weird in any way call 911 right away.
  5. You can also check in with Poison Control 1-800-222-1222, this is also a number that should be taught to children
  6. Arizona has some special creepy little things like rattlesnakes, Gila monsters, Africanized Honeybees, tarantulas (usually harmless unless you provoke them), spiders and my favorite Assassin Bug.

Hey, its only my opinion.

OK I’ve had enough, let’s stop our bickering and whining folks and let’s get to solving the more important issues at hand. Nothing gets me madder than all this constant disintegration of our lives here on earth. We are only here a very short time and whether we are picking on this class of person, or another – it just isn’t worth the time or aggravation (by the way if you made a mistake 30 years ago, it’s time to forgive and move on). Let’s work on making this place we live a better place for as many as we can.

I like the premise of “Star Trek”, everyone is equal and all are working toward equality for all. Remember the one where the guy was black on the left side and white on the right side the and the other was black on the right side and white on the left side. It showed the hypocrisy of the entire race point anyway. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Constitution spelled it out “all men are created equal” – period! The United States is a great place, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Why do we continue to beat ourselves up, often focusing our attention on hurting each other?

Anyway to my point, why can’t we focus in on the really important things like solving Malaria or Dengue Fever or Stop Dengue or for that matter any of the known diseases? So tell me what is your opinion, why can’t we all get along (Rodney King said it Best)?

Don’t be shy, comment below.

Always on the job, who are they?

We probably don’t realize what they do but we probably couldn’t live without them – the U.S. Custom and Border agents. Every day they intercept bugs and all kinds of things we don’t need in the U.S. “Custom and Border Protection intercept unwelcome pests“.

In fiscal year 2012 — from Oct. 1, 2011 until Sept. 20, 2012 — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and agriculture specialists in South Texas intercepted 13,553 pests. They also intercepted 22,518 quarantined animal materials and 100,338 quarantined plant materials, according to the agency.

Notice, that is just one border station and kind of scary when you really think about it. Arizona Game and Fish have an action plan in place for mussel movement on boats.
