It turns out that millions of tiny bugs are consuming the equivalent of 60,000 hot dogs per year over a 150-block strip in Manhattan.

Just when you thought it was safe to go out into the streets of New York City – this amazing factoid “The bugs on a single NYC median can eat 14 pounds of food per year” Actually it is a good thing, if they didn’t eat all this stuff it might bring out more and possibly dangerous things like rodents.

My thoughts are just one rodent in the house is one to many. Wherever you live  there is probably a  Pest Management Professional…

Strigamia maritime, a venomous and carnivorous centipede species that can be found on the coast of the Moray Firth in Scotland, has provided scientists with an insight into the evolution of myriapods (a subphylum of arthropods that includes centipedes and millipedes), a group that first evolved over half a billion years ago.

A new discovery.

Well it turns out to be Vietnam, and this find along with a few others doubles the number of known stick species. The Phryganistria heusii yentuensis measures 32 cm and 54 cm if its legs are extended. OK I’m going to do some math for you, I really looked it up online but 54 cm is 1 foot 9 inches. That is one awfully big stick insect…

Stick insects really don’t do any damage, they can from time to time get into homes. This can cause distress for some people, freaking them out. I have seen grown men waffle at the sight of a cockroach and scorpion. This one guy had forgotten to keep his toilet bowl filled with water and there were numerous American Roaches in the toilet and bathroom. At first I couldn’t decide how to treat, I decided to just grab and crush and he went running. I myself cannot stand spiders and doesn’t really matter what type, they are all gross.

“How satellites are helping combat diseases spread by insects”

Well to use that phrase – We’ve come a long way. Technology continues to help the cause, satellites are capable of tracking insect movements and could potentially help us to forecast diseases and they have combined it into an phone app.

So these new technology items may one day show early warning signals of the risk of epidemics etc.

Bats are great and need your love. Here are a few facts & tips:

  1. Babies are born furless.
  2. Only mammal to fly.
  3. Bats eat lots of bugs, disperse seeds and pollinate plants.
  4. They can eat their body weight in bugs each night, that would be like us eating 80 pizzas.

What can you do to prevent them from making your home theirs and to encourage them at your home.

  1. Exclusion work must be done out of season and at night.
  2. Install a bat house around your home Bat Conservation International.

Never pick up a bat, they do bite!

National Geographic photographer Ingo Arndt‘s new book Animal Architecture shows how animals and insects from around the world build intricate structures from nature’s raw materials.

I love when people are inspired by insects or animals in general and this book takes a look at that angle. I think that termite mounds are a perfect example of this, it allows air flow including heat and built in air conditioning. I’m going to purchase the book and see what else is building their way into the future.

As Americans we often think of bugs and we scream or roll our eyes in disgust. I know people around the world have been eating bugs for years and our cave people probably had to eat them. A company in Denver, Colorado came up with an idea – to promote them in eye catching and funny packaging.

“Will Americans buy bug snacks? Maybe… If they’re funny and cute.” As we approach 7 billion people around the world I think we need to really consider some new and novel ideas for food.

Whether its honeybees, wasps, hornets or scorpions its the sting that will get you. I don’t think anyone of us enjoys accidentally getting stung by something but to many it just takes one sting and we go into anaphylactic shock. Until I read this article about the “Canadian Mayor dies after wasp attack” I didn’t or couldn’t remember that one sting might not kill you but the next might trigger that anaphylactic shock. That is why we must all be aware of our surroundings whether hiking, camping or just out for a stroll around your home.

Did you know honeybees have a stinger that is barbed, so one sting and they give up their life for the colony while wasps, hornets and scorpions can continue to sting. Paperwasps sometimes look like they are watching you as walk around or into the path where their nests is. I don’t think it is a death watch its just that they are protecting their nests. So be warned and stay clear if possible.

I ran across this story from back in February 2014 “8 Deadliest Insects in the World.” My guess was correct as I frequently mention it in many of my bug presentations. So what do you think are the top eight? Go ahead and take a good guess.
