The biggest issue I have with DIY (Do It Yourself) pest control is that most people don’t understand bugs. If you have the knowledge then you can deal with the pest. Same reason I don’t replace my own brakes on my vehicle. I don’t have a clue and frankly I don’t want to know. But let me tell you, I know bugs.

You know those cockroach stations that you just throw into the kitchen or bathroom cabinet, they might work if you get them close enough. But most people just toss them into the cabinet and that isn’t very helpful. Yes some roaches will find the stuff but if you place them near the source, it will work better.

So how would you control these roaches if the bait wasn’t close by, it’s far easier to just call a Pest Management Professional. 480-831-9328

One of the hardest things that I run across when dealing with termites in the garage are built in shelves. The problem is their location in regards to the expansion joint. Now I agree where else would you build the shelves, certainly not the center of the garage – that would be impractical. Here is my suggestion – don’t secure the bottom shelf. This would allow us the option of removing that shelf and drilling our necessary holes to prevent termites.

One of the calls I get this time of year concerns this little fellow above, the Crane Fly. It looks like a mosquito on steroids and are in the same Order Diptera (= two wings) as mosquitoes. Crane Flies are found throughout the world, in Arizona generally right after the Spring rains we see them and then all of a sudden they are gone (usually living only 10 – 15 days). The larvae are found near water and eat organic materials and become food for fish and other small insects.

Just after emerging from her pupa case she seeks out a male, mates and lays eggs in moist soil. So hang in there they won’t be around long. Oh I almost forgot they don’t bite so no worries.

Part of my tour for my family and friends includes a visit to the Grand Canyon and the path to the South Rim goes right by this unique little place. The Historic Cameron Trading Post – For nearly a century the Cameron Trading Post has been a Grand Canyon lodging haven for travelers, traders, vacationers and explorers who come from all points of the globe.  The Cameron Trading Post is more than an Indian lodge or Grand Canyon hotel. Established in 1916, the Cameron Indian Trading Post has become a showplace for fine Native American art and Southwest art. Now I will admit if you plan your trip just right – lunch is the thing to do. **** Caution – look around before order – the Indian taco (that is what they call it) is huge. Maybe you can share one but it is worth it – TRUST ME ON THIS!

Another tip from an experienced tourist – set by the window in the back, because you never know what you might see. Birds, lizards and maybe more.

PHILADELPHIA – Seven pest management professionals are D.C.-bound after being chosen to win a free trip to NPMA’s Legislative Day 2014, courtesy of FMC Corporation. Entries were collected online and during PestWorld 2013 in Phoenix, with the winners drawn randomly at PestWorld by NPMA Executive Vice President Bob Rosenberg. The winners will receive airfare, registration and a two-night hotel stay. They are:

South Mountain, Phoenix, AZ

At more than 16,000 acres, South Mountain Park/Preserve is the largest municipal park in the country, according to the Trust for Public Land. It boasts 51 miles of primary trails for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking for all ability levels. The history of South Mountain Park/Preserve as a city park dates back to 1924. Prominent local citizens, with the help of Sen. Carl Hayden, bought 13,000 acres from the federal government for $17,000. In 1935 the National Park Service developed a master plan for the park with riding and hiking trails, picnic areas and overlooks, all in rustic regional character. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built many of the facilities in the park, based on this master plan.

One of my favorite things to do when I have guests coming into town is to pick them up from Sky Harbor airport and have lunch at the top of South Mountain. Lizards a plenty and sometimes tarantula’s and if your really lucky maybe some wildlife including ground squirrels.

Yep, those cockroaches learn another trick to stay alive!

Most of us learned in our early years that cockroaches would survive a nuclear attack, I know its hard to believe but they have adapted well to us and our ways.

Well it appears that they have learned to avoid some of the sweet baits, which we (Pest Industry) may be using. “Wily Cockroaches Find Another Survival Trick: Laying Off the Sweets” By James Gorman – The New York Times – Science section.

One thing I didn’t notice with the research was that in certain time periods cockroaches prefer different food like proteins and will readily avoid anything sweet. So I think the research will continue and will continue to offer us new products to keep roaches at bay.
