I’m sure you’ve heard this old adage, but why is it that people don’t believe me when I tell them bug facts? Well I’m being a bit facetious but sometimes I get frustrated. I was talking to a property manager about 2 years ago and she said she gets tired of people dumping furniture in dumpsters because the Bed Bugs are jumping out of them. I tried to convince her that that wasn’t possible. It was in July and the temperature within that dumpster must have been over 150, the only way they were getting out was if someone jumped in a brought them out. Recently someone said their friend told them that ticks can drop on you from trees. The only way that happens is at about the height of an animal, not from the pine cones or higher.

I have to tell you, sometimes I worry about people. Why you ask? Because of stories like this “Feeding Alligators: dangerous unlawful.”  I guess it doesn’t really surprise me, that is why those shows on TV are so riveting. You know someone is going to walk up to that Buffalo like he knows what he is doing and then POW…. I guess that is why all those warning labels are on things, to stop that one person who was thinking – should I really do that or not. Selection of the fitness!

So what kind of tips can I give if you own a house and want to keep those critters out:

  1. Don’t encourage them to live with you, don’t stack stuff around the outside of your home.
  2. Check weep holes and secure them – no open holes.
  3. Don’t create harborages, don’t set your shed on the ground. This is a possible site for all types of animals.
  4. Don’t leave doors or windows opened, things can crawl in. That is how I captured the snake below, someone left a door opened. She was about a foot long and is currently over 6 foot.

The secret to success for scorpion control is the determination and fortitude to persevere. Here in Arizona bark scorpions can pack a good little sting, so its important to endeavor to control. What are the keys:

  1. Pest Control – I suggest monthly.
  2. Black-lighting to track them down.
  3. Home seal your home.

We have two award winning Zoo’s in Phoenix in my opinion.

 

PhxZoo   The Phoenix Zoo 455 North Galvin Parkway Phoenix, AZ 85008 602-273-1341. This is an awesome zoo and they continue to become better and better, They do have a notice on their webpage about sunscreen and I’m telling you in the summer that is a great idea actually all year long is good. Wear a hat and glasses as well, but they do have several exhibits inside which will help you cool off.

 

 

WildlifeWorldZoo  The World Wildlife Zoo & Aquarium 623-935-WILD (9453) | 16501 W. Northern Ave., Litchfield Park, AZ 85340.  It is great to have an additional zoo in the Phoenix area, since I love the concept of promoting animals and wildlife. They recently opened their 4th aquarium building which include turtles and otter habitats.

I enjoy getting out and exploring, so please plan a visit to Arizona and see the beauty that is beneath your feet. All of these caves are unique in their own ways, dry, wet and breathtaking beauty but remember “Don’t Touch”, many of these formations take centuries to form.

Colossal Caves – outside of Tucson, my favorite cave in Arizona. I probably have been here at least 4 times. 16721 E. Old Spanish Trail Vail, AZ 85641 – 520.647.PARK (7275)  I really love this cave, the tour takes about 45 minutes and the temperature is always about 70 degrees which is wonderful in the summer. You can actually witness bats and hear them making their little noise and cave formations like stalactites, flowstone, boxwork and helictites.

Kartchner Caverns State Park  Kartchner Caverns SP Benson, AZ 85602 (520) 586-2283 This park has a recent history having been found in 1974 but kept as a secret until 1978/1984 and is considered a living cave.

Grand Canyon Caves  – Mile 115 Route 66 63 Miles NE of Kingman AZ and 65 Miles West of Williams and the Grand Canyon Railroad

This cave is unique in that they have a Sloth bear (Jesse), offer night stays and the only draw back is that it is way out there. But it still deserves a visit, its on my list of things to see in Arizona.

One of my favorite calls relates to how scorpions get into bathrooms or showers. People tell me they come up drains and that is incorrect. Arizona Bark Scorpions enter your home by crawling up stucco and gaining access into your attic. They then crawl around and under the insulation and finally they come to a recess light or something that was cut through the ceiling drywall. See all those cracks and if your home isn’t sealed well enough they will fall right into your house. Sometimes there are lights or fans right above the bath or shower and they just fall in. So here is my advice, pull down the plate that covers these holes and caulk the hole. This should be done on the top floor ceiling or if you live in a single story house the ceiling. This next week the National Pest Management Association kicks off Termite Awareness Week (March 16-22). The Spring brings a lot more activity for termites on the East Coast, well what about Arizona? Our monsoon (usually in the late summer) brings the rain and this triggers the termites and other bugs to become more active.

So as the cold disappears and the warm weather finally makes it to the Valley, keep an eye out for termites and other bugs. No freezing weather – less death of common food of the scorpions and that means that the scorpions didn’t succumb to the extreme cold either.

I think if we had to say bad, the number 1 bad guy would be the mosquito and #2 would probably be the flea. But what about the good ones, such as honeybees except when they attack and ants. Some may fit into both categories such as honeybees – great honey and they pollinate but may also sting and hurt. I guess I can think of the good and bad as somewhat of a trade off, we need pollination and yet people die from bee stings each year. Termites are essential in the forest, composting trees and wood into vital nutrients within the soil.

  3. Fleas
  4. Flies
  5. Rodents

Top 5 good in my opinion

  1. Honeybees
  2. Ants
  3. Butterflies or Moths
  4. Ladybugs

So as our Northern folks dig their way out of all the snow or battle those extremely cold and brutal temperatures, I think about the warm weather affecting scorpions. With little to no real cold spells here in Arizona I think it’s going to be a tough year on those that have scorpions near their homes. If the weather doesn’t get cold enough, scorpions won’t die. The weather also affects their food supply like crickets or roaches. So my prediction is that there will be plenty of scorpions to go around.

Just what you want to hear, right?
