What’s in your meter box or sprinkle system box?

Cockroaches, spiders, snakes – yep I’ve seen all of the stuff listed.

Does your pest control operator/technician treat your meter boxes, they should. I frequently see all kinds of bugs in these boxes and it may be just a matter of time before someone sticks their hand into the box and gets a nasty bite or sting. Special note – I sometimes will find honeybees deciding to make that box a h0me. Maybe big enough now but they will eventaully move but not before stinging or hurting someone. Bee Careful…

Antarctica is the only continent without any reptiles or snakes.

A pound of grasshoppers is three times as nutritious as a pound of beef.

Anteaters prefer termites to ants.

A bat is the only mammal that flies.

Out of every 1,000 Mosquitoes, one female carries a disease that could be fatal to humans.

It’s not always about the Scorpions, how about visiting Arizona? Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest National Park

Just for the record the trees are not standing up, they are petrified (you know who you are). Petrified Forest National Park is the only national park unit to protect a section of Historic Route 66! Animal life at Petrified Forest includes amphibians, birds, insects, spiders, mammals, and reptiles. Over sixteen varieties of lizards and snakes make Petrified Forest their home.

Always on the job, who are they?

We probably don’t realize what they do but we probably couldn’t live without them – the U.S. Custom and Border agents. Every day they intercept bugs and all kinds of things we don’t need in the U.S. “Custom and Border Protection intercept unwelcome pests“.

In fiscal year 2012 — from Oct. 1, 2011 until Sept. 20, 2012 — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and agriculture specialists in South Texas intercepted 13,553 pests. They also intercepted 22,518 quarantined animal materials and 100,338 quarantined plant materials, according to the agency.

Notice, that is just one border station and kind of scary when you really think about it. Arizona Game and Fish have an action plan in place for mussel movement on boats.

Some people are just amazing, aren’t they?

Some people are just plain out there, now I know what happens when someone really ticks you off and you want revenge. I believe in Karma, sometimes you just have to wait and see what happens but getting even doesn’t really help. Not that I know for sure about this. “Main Line Realtor fired for (Alleged) rodent dumping“. (Alleged) keep that in mind – I don’t suggest doing this, remember there are cameras everywhere.

It’s not always about the Scorpions, how about visiting Arizona? Saguaro National Park

Saguaro National Park and Sonoran Desert Museum

On every trip to Tucson I love to take this tour, I meander through the Saguaro National Park and culminate the visit with a stop at the Desert Museum. Unlike any museum – it really is a zoo, it is a walk around experience. Tucson, Arizona is home to North America’s largest cacti. The giant saguaro is the universal symbol of the American west. These majestic plants, found only in a small portion of the United States, are protected by Saguaro National Park, to the east and west of the modern city of Tucson. Here you have a chance to see these enormous cacti, silhouetted by the beauty of a magnificent desert sunset.

This was the first place I ever witnessed a tarantula just walking around, he was out prowling for a female and was headed toward the gift shop. No he wasn’t interested in a souvenir, at least I don’t think so. They have exhibits of carpenter bees or solitary bees and several exhibits of insects inside.

One of my first encounters with a rattlesnake, probably 5 1/2 to 5 foot and probably stood up at least a foot. Scared me – I guess it doesn’t matter if you have never heard that sound or not but you are likely never to forget it.

Were you aware that May is “National Pet Month”?

Were you aware that May is “National Pet Month”?

Lots of us own pets, from cats to snakes and because of this we can also from time to time get uninvited pests including ticks and other vermin. In Arizona we don’t get fleas very often but we do encounter ticks on a regular basis. So what can you do to stop those infestations from happening to your home.

  1. Don’t leave food out for feral cats, this may bring in other unwanted pests.
  2. If you see holes in the yard check for Pocket gophers, they can damage plants and bring in pests.
  3. Even birds like pigeons can bring in pests, don’t allow them them to live on your roof.
  4. Bats can make your attic a home, seal and block all access into your attic. Bat Bugs can take up residence within your attic and if you get rid of the bats, the Bat Bugs may come into your home space.
  5. Check your pets frequently for signs of fleas or ticks. You can use over the counter medicines but if you do please mention this to your Pest Management Professional – some of those products may contain a similar products and cause an overdose to the pet.
  6. Keep grass or vegetation trimmed around the home.
  7. Don’t become a hoarder, keep debris away from the home and discourage rodent activity.
  8. Never place firewood next to your home, don’t invite rodents or pests near the home. If you use firewood only bring in what you plan on using right away.
  9. If you have rodents, it may lead to snakes. Snakes have to eat so don’t encourage them to come to your house.
  10. Don’t allow water to stand, mosquitoes can bite and transit diseases and parasites to your pets.

It’s not always about the Scorpions, how about visiting Arizona? Montezuma’s Castle

It’s not always about the Scorpions, how about visiting Arizona?

 Montezuma’s Castle

Montesuma Castle 05 Page 00On the last day of each month we will run a series on visiting Arizona and what cool stuff we have here including wildlife. 12 of my favorite places.

This picture is Montezuma’s Castle –  located near Camp Verde, Arizona, in the Southwestern United States, features well-preserved cliff-dwellings. They were the Sinaquas. Ancient Indian Tribe who built the cliff dwellings called Montezuma Castle about 700 years ago in the early 1300s. The Sinaqua abandoned their habitat in this Verde Valley Arizona area in the 1400s.A few desert animals are primarily active during the day, or “diurnal”. These include rock squirrels, chipmunks, lizards, snakes, hawks, and eagles.
