New research on Phobia’s

It appears that after therapy who can take a nap and wake up less afraid of whatever. “Afraid of Spiders? Try sleeping on it.” I may need something like this, I really don’t like spiders, at all.

This technique is usually very effective – and extremely speedy, with often just a few short sessions needed to see off the phobia. But it doesn’t work perfectly for everyone. The answer for this minority of phobia patients, it seems, may be surprisingly simple: schedule a nap immediately after the therapy session.

It’s not always about the Scorpions, how about visiting Arizona? Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest National Park

Just for the record the trees are not standing up, they are petrified (you know who you are). Petrified Forest National Park is the only national park unit to protect a section of Historic Route 66! Animal life at Petrified Forest includes amphibians, birds, insects, spiders, mammals, and reptiles. Over sixteen varieties of lizards and snakes make Petrified Forest their home.

No two spider webs are the same.

Only three kinds of animals fight battles in formations: humans, crows and ants.

Ticks are second only to the mosquito as the most dangerous parasites to humans.

A group of Cockroaches are called a Intrusion, I’d say!!!!

I’m sure you know this but probably never thought about it – Animals that lay eggs don’t have belly buttons.

The bite from a black widow spider is not automatically fatal, in fact, less than 1% of all people bitten by this spider run the risk of dying, and most of them are saved with the use of antivenin.

A house fly lives for only 14 days.

Tarantulas can live 30 years.

Scorpions can live for more than a year without eating.

Each year, insects eat 1/3 of the Earth’s food crop.

What are centipedes?

What are centipedes? Spiders or insects?

probestpestmanagementIMAG0212

This Arizona Centipede is actually an arthropod (arthropods are organisms that have segmented bodies, a jointed skeleton and paired jointed limbs. They include such creatures as spiders, centipedes and insects) that has an elongated body with one pair of legs per segment. So really neither spider or insect but a creature all it’s own. They range in size from less than an inch to several inches. The smaller, brown and tan, common desert centipede does bite, it can be painful but not deadly to humans.

The centipede is one of the oldest animals on Earth having evolved into the form it is today, millions of years ago. The centipede has been found in fossils dating over 400 million years old.

Today is April Fools Day, so in honor of those mischievous ones among us….

Bed Bugs can fly! Nope, wrong they cannot fly, period!

Mice love cheese! As for mice and cheese, to start off, mice have really sensitive noses, so Limburger would peel their little mousey faces off. Figuratively speaking. And then a recent study that we hope was funded by a grant to investigate cartoon myths found that mice respond to the taste, smell and texture of food, and will decline something as strong-smelling and highly flavored as cheese. They’re actually drawn to foods with relatively high sugar content, such as grains and fruit.

Daddy longlegs “spiders” are extremely poisonous. False. First, grand daddy longlegs are not spiders. They are related to them, but they are not true spiders. Grand daddy longlegs are more correctly called harvestmen.  True spiders are hunters and have venom. Harvestmen are scavengers and do not have venom. So, unless you are a very tiny insect or some type of organic goo, you have nothing to fear from the harvestman lurking by your garage door.

Lice is the result of poor hygiene. False One of the oldest beliefs is that head lice prefer “dirty kids.” It’s simply not true. Head lice actually prefer clean hair to dirty hair. What they are attracted to is blood.

The custom of playing tricks on friends on April 1st is believed to have originated in France in the middle 1500s.

Now what do you do?

spider

This reminded me of the many things we do and don’t always finish as human beings. We start a project and it goes on forever, you attempt to kill that spider and he falls and you can’t find him. Yuuuuuck, right! The nice thing about this is that I don’t believe spiders or insects in general can remember stuff like this.

Tom Turpin Professor of Entomology at Purdue University has written the following:

“Sensory memory applies to all kinds of animals. But do seemingly mindless creatures such as insects have memories? Scientists say “yes.” Certainly, insects learn. Insects such as butterflies learn the shape of preferred host plant leaves. Honey bees can learn the visual landmarks between the hive and a patch of flowers. Grasshoppers learn to avoid plants that upset their stomachs.”

Rats are neophobic – they don’t like new things, so if you put something new in their environment they will avoid it for awhile.

You don’t want to get bitten by a rat, they have a force up to 7,000 pounds per square inch, OUCH!

Presence of insects on and inside a corpse can be a critical clue towards estimating the time of death for bodies dead for longer periods of time. Because flies rapidly discover a body and their development times are predictable under particular environmental conditions, the time of death can be calculated by counting back the days from the state of development of flies living on the corpse. YUCK!

For its weight, spider web silk is actually stronger & tougher than steel.

The first known use of pesticide was elemental sulfur dusting. This method was used in ancient Sumer about 4500 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia.
