Watch where you step while hiking…

My Beagle Lilly almost ran into this guy yesterday on our hike at Sears Kay Ruin in Cave Creek, Arizona. It is very important to be aware of everything while hiking. You never know when you may be attacked by bees or a spider may walk in front of you.

So be careful and enjoy your hike!

Bugs and Spiders do travel

Bugs and Spiders do travel…

Green tires go black By: Bob Bissler

Stories like this above fascinate me and always get me to think about the way that bugs might hitch a ride. Way back in 2011 I wrote a home seal “The Beast escapes….“, where I mentioned the Brazilian Wandering Spider ending up in Germany on bananas. We are a traveling nation, we can pick up today and move without any concern to location. We can store all of our stuff in facilities and we never know what we might be bringing with us.

Border agents work with this premise everyday and every state cutting budgets over the years “Budget cuts affecting everyone” – is it possible to stop the pests? I guess time will tell, so be aware when placing hands into places where you can’t see.

Phoenix Zoo – Phoenix, Arizona celebrates 50 years.

PHXZoo   Phoenix, Arizona celebrates 50 years.

The Phoenix Zoo is one of the largest private non-profit organizations in the country. We rely on admissions, concessions, memberships, special event and philanthropic donations for our daily operations.

By supporting the Phoenix Zoo, such donations have helped the Phoenix Zoo to serve over 42 million people since opening in 1962, care for more than 1,300 animals, including hundreds of endangered or threatened species and become the second most popular cultural attraction in Arizona, behind only the Grand Canyon.

Congratulations to the Zoo, it’s a cool place to check out the animals and have some great family fun!

Boy this is a scary photo…

Boy this is a scary photo, always take care when placing your hand anywhere!

You go shopping and pick up a roll or two of toilet apper and you take it home and put it on the spindel. Never in your wildest imagination do you think there is something lurking in the dark. I’m even freaked out by this photo! Pest Control is often done at facilites that make products but along the way hitchhikers can and do get onto pallets. Its essential that we all take the time to be observant.

Take care and call ProBest Pest Management if you want us to take care of the bugs and spiders in your life….

Spider Molting….

I was doing my teaching thing the other day at the Chandler Environmental Center and the kids really got excited about the molting process. I did my best to explain how we shed our skin and showed them the skin of a snake, so this video really shows how spiders really shed their skin. For those of us that have tarantula’s – it really is cool how they perform this task. So the next time you see a web, that spider that you think is just hanging out may not be a spider at all – just the old skin. Cockroaches, spiders and scorpions all molt their skin.

How about those scary things at Halloween?

OK I thought this was cool but I’m a bug guy, have you seen  any scary things at Halloween by way of bugs etc. The picture below was from the Phoenix Zoo. Comment below…

Successful strategies to prepare your home for winter:

Successful strategies to prepare your home for winter:

The key in my book is to keep an eye out throughout the year. If Africanized Honeybee’s have taken up residence and you didn’t notice it for a year you will have more problems because of the time involved to build more colony and honey storage. So here is my list:

  1. Check your home outside for any holes that may have developed over the past year – seal them, I suggest copper wool (won’t rust) or steel wool. Check for signs of termites, such as termite tubes or tunnels or damage. This can also be damage from water as well.
  2. Check inside your home, look for baseboard or paint that seems to be cracked or crinkled which might suggest termite activity.
  3. Only bring in enough firewood that you will use immediately, firewood can bring in pests like spiders, beetles or termites.
  4. Repair any screens that have been damaged.
  5. The winter is also a great time to check your attic, it’s cooler. Check for animal signs like feces or nesting materials. Check the roof for signs of water staining or damage, if capable check the roof from the outside – check shingles or tiles for any damage.
  6. If this is a cabin, drain the water lines and clean up. This will allow you to notice things on your return visit, remember HantaVirus and the clean up procedures.
  7. Now is also a good time to call your local Pest Management Professional for an inspection, especially here in Arizona because of the monsoon and the rains which make termites more active.

They grow them big in New Mexico!

As the name suggests, these spiders are hunters. They are big and hairy which generally creeps out most people. The female will lay an egg sac, which she will bite open and allow the spiderlings to crawl on her back. They will stay there for a little over a week and then gradually move on to do there own hunting. They typically hunt at night and may enter homes while searching for food.
