Something buzzing you at your local store?

Something buzzing you at your local store?

So yesterday I was shopping here in Gilbert and noticed this lovely little set of bug traps. These traps catch a variety of pests but are designed to capture stored product pest such as Indianmeal Moths to beetles to flies. Depending on the type of store,  food stores probably at greater risk for grain damage and other types of warehouses which may contain flowers, seeds or hides.

Stored product pest are commonly referred to as pantry pests, if located in a product purchased from a store recently you can contact the retailer who then contacts the manufacturer and the possibility of the lot being recalled or destroyed is good. I’m a big fan of freezing the items and then putting it into Tupperware or some type of sealed container. Stored Product pest damage approximately 10% of the world’s annual production of stored grains, In 1981 the loss was was estimated to over 1 Billion dollars in the U.S. Remember by the time you see the flying adults it’s probably to late, the larva are the ones to catch (they eat and damage) the adults only want to reproduce.

By the way there are plenty of different types of pests that eat this type of food, we are only scratching the surface with these two moths. Have you seen something like this, what would you do if you brought it home and it was infested? Do you have a scary of unique story about stored product pests? Comment below.

Black Widow Spiders

The more food (prey) on your property might increase the probabilities of scorpions and or spiders. Spiders are good for pest reduction but they also pose a clear and present danger to the homeowner and family. Most webs are in out of the way areas, sheltered porches and sheds. I have seen them under stone benches and planters. Webs can be several feet across, with guywires well beyond that and the web itself is crinkly to the touch. The Black Widow hangs upside down waiting for prey to come in contact with the web.

Always wear gloves when doing work around the house and shed.

I can spot these from the streets – termite tubes…

I can spot these from the streets – termite tubes… Can you?

Well it’s that time of year to be watching out for termites here in Arizona. Monsoon brings water and rain and the termites begin to forage because of it. So this is what you keep an eye out for, mud tubes or tunnels and if they get into the home drop tubes or damage on the sheetrock or drywall.

So if you see something suspicious call us to take a look, it may be nothing or it might be those pesky little termites. p

World Mosquito Day

World Mosquito Day

Never before seen letters reveal the story of the scientist who laid the foundations of a cure for malaria more than a century ago

When British doctor Sir Ronald Ross discovered the crucial link between mosquitoes and malaria at the end of the 19 century, he understandably thought it marked the beginning of the end of the deadly disease… More than a century after Ross’s momentous break through, malaria continues to kill hundreds of thousands of people every year- a neglected disease for much of the 20 century.

Cimex K9 – A Bed Bug Experience by ProBest Pest Management

Cimex K9 – A Bed Bug Experience by ProBest Pest Management

I often speak about technology and with the advent of Bed Bugs it is great to see an ally in the industry. Dogs can smell way better than we can and can be rated – in this case by The Bed Bug Dog Registry. We use a team of dogs from Cimex K9 and the other day I had an opportunity to see them in action. Eric (handler) and Kohl (expert bed bug sniffer dog).

[slide]

Well anyway here is the story, somebody got Bed Bugs and after the treatment wanted to make absolutely, positively certain there were no Bed Bugs in this home. It was also a great experience for us, Seth did a remarkable job (as always) and Kohl didn’t find anything except a few dead things. Which is good because Kohl only hits on LIVE.  Eric does play a little game with Kohl, just to be sure he is on the game, after the inspection he hides a bottle with a few Bed Bugs in it just to make sure Kohl in on game and you see by the pictures that Kohl did an excellent job.

So whether before or after we can get the K9 involved to assist in either the pre-inspection or post-inspection.

Sleep tight and Don’t let the Bed Bugs Bite!

Scorpion Venom Heals Dru-Resistant bacteria Infection”

“The advancement of the arts, from year to year, taxes our credulity and seems to presage the arrival of that period when human improvement must end.” many people may believe that Henry J. Ellsworth Commissioner of the U.S. Patent Office who is sometimes quoted as having said: “Mankind,” he declared, “has already achieved all of which it is capable. There would be no more inventions requiring patents.” There is also debate that you might be thinking about a quote attributed to Charles H. Duell, US Patent Commissioner who, in 1899 said, “Everything that can be invented has been invented.”

I’m constantly impressed that we continue to forge ahead with advancements in science, from autism and now to the role of scorpion venom to fight bacteria.

The naming of scientific names of critters goes way back to the founder “Carl Linnaeus” he is credited as being the first to give a name based on taxonomy. But sometimes I think some of these folks are playing games, there is one guy who named things after Star Wars characters – wasp names Polemistus chewbacca, Polemistus vaderi, and Polemistus yoda. So please check out “14 Great Names for Bugs” for an interesting take on naming bugs.

Typically the person who discovers the animals or critter gets to give the critter it’s scientific name , usually they associate it with their name but not always. So its fun to see how the intellectuals name the bug.

It gets weirder and weirder, that’s all I can say!

Man sets house ablaze while killing spiders with blowtorchIt continues to surprise me and by now you would think it wouldn’t faze me but come on folks. What was he thinking?

I guess I was thinking it just seems to be the Bed Bug hysteria but I was wrong, wouldn’t a broom been just as easy? This also cuts across almost every state in the U.S. Please think before you do anything like this, it may seem fun but in this case = no home!
