Celebrating Arizona’s 100th Birthday

Celebrating Arizona’s 100th Birthday

Arizona became a state on February 14, 1912. It was the last of the 48 contiguous states to be admitted to the union.

Arizona adopted the current version of the state flag in 1917.

Blue and gold are the colors of Arizona. Red and gold are the colors carried by Coronado’s Expedition of 1540 to the Seven Cities of Cibola.  The blue is “liberty blue” identical to the color in the United States flag field of stars. There are thirteen rays of the sun representing the original thirteen colonies. The large copper star identifies Arizona as the largest producer of copper in the United States.

Arizona history is rich in legends of America’s Old West. It was here that the great Indian chiefs Geronimo and Cochise led their people against the frontiersmen. Tombstone, Ariz., was the site of the West’s most famous shoot-out—the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Tips for Finding A Pest Control Pro

Tips for Finding A Pest Control Pro

  1.  Always deal with a qualified and licensed pest management company. Consider asking to see the license or other credentials of the pest control professional that comes to solve your pest problem.
  2. Evaluate pest control companies that are members of national, state or local pest management associations.
  3. Consider an NPMA QualityPro company. Visit www.npmaqualitypro.com for more information.
  4. Ask friends and neighbors to recommend pest control companies they have used successfully and how satisfied they were with the service.
  5. Be wary of the exterminator who comes to your home uninvited and offers to give your house a free inspection for pests. He or she may try to scare you into authorizing immediate and costly treatments.
  6. If a sizable amount of money is involved, get bids from several pest management companies.
  7. Don’t rush a decision. Since you are paying for professional knowledge as well as skillful application of pesticides, look for someone whose judgment you can trust.
  8. Before signing a contract, be sure to fully understand the nature of the household pest to be exterminated, the extent of the infestation, and the work necessary to solve the problem.
  9. Find out if the pest control company has liability insurance to cover any damages to your house or furnishings during treatment.
  10. If a guarantee is given, know what it covers, how long it lasts, what you must do to keep it in force, and what kind of continuing control, prevention and management are necessary.
  11. Buy value, not price. Beware of exterminators that offer bargains that sound too good to be true.
  12. Homeowners can call state pest control regulatory agencies for information regarding the status of pest management companies. In most states the regulatory agency is the State Department of Agriculture.

What happens when the drycleaners refuse your clothes?

What happens when the drycleaners refuse your clothes?

Dry cleaners refuse bedbug-infested clothing: CBC News

This could be a serious problem for a place that handles clothes on a daily basis, what happens if they infest cloths and they are transported to their homes.  So from a liability side – where do they stand, who would be at fault? Let’s ask an attorney here in Arizona,

Unless a dry cleaner knows or should know a customer’s items are infested with bed bugs, the customer who brought bed bug infested items to a dry cleaner should be responsible for any resulting damages due to the infestation.  In reality; however, the cleaner – as a business with liability insurance – will end up paying for any resulting damages.  The cleaner also should consider “damage-control” to lessen the possibility of negative publicity that can ruin a business.  Therefore, the cleaner should take preventative steps:  Get education/information about identifying evidence of bed begs; if a cleaner want to clean infested items, have a written policy about handling these items; inspect all delivered items; reject any items with evidence of infestation; keep customers’ items separate from one another; consider posting signs that items that have been exposed to bed bugs are note accepted without prior authorization; consider having customers sign an agreement accepting responsibility and indemnifying the cleaner if their infested items cause damages; consider having customers sign an agreement holding the cleaner harmless from any bed bug infestation; and have a written procedure in place and train all staff to follow this procedure if/when a bed bug problem bites.  As with most legal issues, being prepared lessens the possibility of a problem occurring, and lessens the resources needed to resolve a problem when it occurs.

Heat or steam Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs versus heat or steam.

Which works the best, heat or steam? Each has its place, in some cases depending on how much stuff is in the home and how hot can you get it works better. If the home is vacant steam is very effective and generally speaking less costly. So if you have bed bugs it is often advisable to isolate the issue, don’t move furniture or mattresses. You can also use trash bags and insert Nuvan strips inside to kill any bugs and eggs. A friend of mine – Invader Pest Management recently decided to go the way of heat for Bed Bugs and these pictures is how they do it. I also suggest  the Verifi™ monitoring or detection system to make sure the effort has worked or to decide if you have an issue or not.

“To steam or not to steam” that is the question?

Carpet Cleaners – GREEN

Carpet Cleaner and what is GREEN

Carpet Industry or even in our industry Green is a random and often used word which some people don’t understand. Carpet cleaners often claim GREEN and that one company only uses distilled water. In our industry most of those GREEN claims are just not correct – Pyrethoids are they GREEN, organic or what? What about silica – yes it’s glass particles but it can really mess up the veins in your nose and what if you breath it into your lungs. Every once in awhile I see someone spreading DE like it was some kind of innocuous products but much like silica it can also damage the nose veins. Moth balls are another often misused product – Read and understand the labels and use directions.

Illegals…

Those darn illegals…

Illegals – Not the ones you were thinking about, was it. Yep I’m talking about those invasive pests that try to attack our citrus trees and other crops. Invasive species can be anything that wasn’t here before, from bugs like red Imported Fire Ants to plants such as that Russian Thistle – that stuff than tumbles in the wind, often called Tumbleweeds.  “Bug traps, quarantine used to prevent costly citrus bug outbreak” by by Anna Consie/Cronkite News.

Everyone should be vigilant in transporting plants, plant products or anything related to plants. Don’t move plants, bushes or trees across state borders! Be especially watchful when boating, these little hitchhikers can really block waterways.

Spread of “Black Rats”

The spread of “Black Rats”

A great article from Discovery Magazine “Man is the environment of the rat

This story talks about the complexities of movement of invasive species from around the world, also discusses the spread of other problems associated with the spread of those animals and their pests. We have an issues with Mollusks hitching rides on boats and engines. They than drop off or multiply in other fresh bodies of water. Most cases are accidental but sometimes we our are own worse enemies. Bringing to mind Hawaii, bringing in Mongoose to control rats. Rats come out at night not Mongooses. Bad decision and bad consequences.  Now Hawaii has both and they can do some real damage to areas.

Reptile Study w/Scouts

Reptile Study w/Scouts

Reptile, snakes and bugs. Just like a boy or girl to enjoy bugs and wildlife in general, I have a niece that just loves to play with bugs. Maybe she can take over when I retire (if ever) right? Merit badges afford the Scout the opportunity to learn about certain subjects. One of the merit badges I enjoyed was First Aid to Animals, I worked with a local Veterinarian  and really had a blast. I was there when he asked for help in delivering a calf and still to this day will never forget it.

I think that I earned 38 merit badges, 21 required for Eagle Scout. I had a great time in Scouts and I’m please that I was able to help a few more on their way.
