Researchers have sequenced the Centipede genome

Strigamia maritime, a venomous and carnivorous centipede species that can be found on the coast of the Moray Firth in Scotland, has provided scientists with an insight into the evolution of myriapods (a subphylum of arthropods that includes centipedes and millipedes), a group that first evolved over half a billion years ago.

Published by PLOS Biology “The first myriapod genome sequence reveals…” this article might be easier to read “First centipede genome sequenced but scientists still grappling at multiple legs mystery

New discovery of insect

A new discovery.

Well it turns out to be Vietnam, and this find along with a few others doubles the number of known stick species. The Phryganistria heusii yentuensis measures 32 cm and 54 cm if its legs are extended. OK I’m going to do some math for you, I really looked it up online but 54 cm is 1 foot 9 inches. That is one awfully big stick insect…

Stick insects really don’t do any damage, they can from time to time get into homes. This can cause distress for some people, freaking them out. I have seen grown men waffle at the sight of a cockroach and scorpion. This one guy had forgotten to keep his toilet bowl filled with water and there were numerous American Roaches in the toilet and bathroom. At first I couldn’t decide how to treat, I decided to just grab and crush and he went running. I myself cannot stand spiders and doesn’t really matter what type, they are all gross.

Technology and you, what benefits are there?

How satellites are helping combat diseases spread by insects

Well to use that phrase – We’ve come a long way. Technology continues to help the cause, satellites are capable of tracking insect movements and could potentially help us to forecast diseases and they have combined it into an phone app.

So these new technology items may one day show early warning signals of the risk of epidemics etc.

Amazing!

Bats are great and need your love. Here are a few facts & tips:

  1. Babies are born furless.
  2. Only mammal to fly.
  3. Bats eat lots of bugs, disperse seeds and pollinate plants.
  4. They can eat their body weight in bugs each night, that would be like us eating 80 pizzas.

What can you do to prevent them from making your home theirs and to encourage them at your home.

  1. Exclusion work must be done out of season and at night.
  2. Install a bat house around your home Bat Conservation International.

Never pick up a bat, they do bite!

New hotel design inspired by bugs

National Geographic photographer Ingo Arndt‘s new book Animal Architecture shows how animals and insects from around the world build intricate structures from nature’s raw materials.

I love when people are inspired by insects or animals in general and this book takes a look at that angle. I think that termite mounds are a perfect example of this, it allows air flow including heat and built in air conditioning. I’m going to purchase the book and see what else is building their way into the future.

Bed Bugs spreading across the US

Bedbugs are spreading rapidly and continue their march across the US. I  don’t always get creeped out with pests but BedBugs do it for me. I think about accidental infestation, maybe a lone bedbug falls into a pocket or shoe and I bring it home.

Take care traveling, check out the room and if you think you see something contact management. Don’t bring in used furniture without looking it over really well. Check out our webpage https://callprobest.com/bedbugs and the Nation Pest Management Association has a site “All Things Bed Bugs”

Other NPMA Bed Bug Info & Facts:

  • Bed bugs can lay one to five eggs in a day and more than 500 in a lifetime.
  • Bed bugs can survive for several months without eating.
  • Bed bugs can withstand a wide range of temperatures, from nearly freezing to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Bed bug draw blood for about five minutes before retreating to digest.
  • Bed bugs hatchlings are so small they can pass through a stitch-hole in a mattress.
  • Bed bugs can ingest seven times their own weight in blood, which would be the equivalent of an average-sized male drinking 120 gallons of liquid.
  • Bed bugs are found in all 50 U.S. states.

Bug Zoo almost had some new additions

While we were cleaning the Leopard Gecko’s tank this morning we found that she had laid some eggs. Don’t know exactly when but it looks like they are not viable eggs. Would have been fun raising a few more little gecko’s. Maybe next time.

Remember lizards eat a lot of bugs so having them around your home is an inexpensive choice for pest control. Not to put myself out of business but I don’t think they would or could eat all the bugs. So don’t forget to give us a call  602-249-7378 or 623-414-0176

Some Uberfacts for you.

I recently found the Twitter site – @Uberfacts and on FaceBook https://www.facebook.com/UberFacts

They listed a few facts that are amazing  – There are 14 billion insects for every human on Earth. That equals 980,000,000,000,000,000,000 total on the planet. So if you are concerned about a few how about calling ProBest Pest Management 602-249-7378

Kind of scary if you think about it. Picture8

Do lizards eat bugs and scorpions?

Why I’m glad you asked. Yes they do, there was a recent article in Arizona Highways  magazine on nature factoid about Western Banded Geckos. I can’t seem to link to the article that Kristin Kraklio wrote on “Western banded Geckos”.
