Spring is almost here!

  Spring is almost here!

Spring is almost here, at least in Arizona and soon we will heading to those wonderful 120° temperatures. So the BIG question are you ready for Spring Cleaning? Here are a few tips on preparing for the summer heat ahead of us all.

  1. Check all out building for pests, like bees or termites.
  2. Check the eaves of your home for bees and cracks in which bugs hide.
  3. The Spring is a great time to caulk and seal your home against unwanted pests, it’s cooler and we all know we don’t want to do it in the Summer.
  4. Check for any nesting around the home, rodents and birds use nesting material and will often drag it in through opening in the walls and ceilings.
  5. Use a cobweb broom to knock down interior dust webs.
  6. Trim those trees from against the home.
  7. Never stack firewood or wood against the home.
  8. Clean your carpets.
  9. How about some plumbing spring cleaning – here are some tips from Benjamin Franklin Plumbing

University of Arizona Insect Collection

Established in the 1940’s as a small collection dealing with agricultural pests, it has grown to one of the largest and most comprehensive research collection of arthropods in the southwestern United States.

Great resource site for checking out those pests that hang out in the Southwest and yes we are talking about insects…

As if the Bed Bugs weren’t bad enough!!!!

As if the Bed Bugs weren’t bad enough!!!!

Women torches bedbug – infested mattress while angry at husband.” Tampa Bay, Florida http://www.wtsp.com

This all happened the day before Valentine’s Day, the husband didn’t react fast enough so she lit the mattress on fire. I love what the Pest Management Professional Greg Rice of Hulett Environmental Services said

As for the infestation, Rice says if there were bedbugs in the apartment, it’s doubtful they all died in the fire.

“I don’t know if she killed the bedbugs, but she certainly killed that mattress.”

Illegal pesticides sold in NY

Illegal pesticides sold in NY.

There are some laws that make sense and should be enforced to the highest degree. This one caught my attention because of this sentence –

The authorities determined that the liquid contained nearly 61 times the amount of brodifacoum, a powerful rodent killer, permitted by the E.P.A. The substance is an anticoagulant, causing internal bleeding in rodents. The chemical is so dangerous, officials said, that its use is illegal in urban areas unless licensed professionals wearing protective gear apply it.

Movies – my favorite may shock you?

My favorite movies – may shock you?

Movies – There are a few that may surprise you on this list but I think some of you will appreciate some of the weirder ones. Here was my list of  Top 7 homicidal-creepy crawlies movie creatures…  When I was 15 I had the chance to go to Japan for the 13th World Scout Jamboree and on the plane flight I read the book “I am Legend“. It became one of those items that I would read from time to time and then they made a movie of it “I am Legend

My all time favorite is the 1951 version on “The Day the Earth Stood Still” – I did watch the remake but the original was and is still my absolute favorite.

Now I know you’re waiting for my favorite bug movie and it has to be the 1990 Arachnophobia with John Goodman as the bug dude – it stills creeps me out.

Check it out – it is a spider creepy movie…

When is a PEST a Pest?

When is a PEST a Pest?

The Arizona Office of Pest Management defines as “Pest” means a vertebrate or invertebrate insect, bird, mammal, organism, or a weed or plant pathogen that is in an undesirable location.

So what does that mean, let’s say you have Bahia Grass growing in your driveway and that it doesn’t belong there or you don’t want it there = pest. Or you have roof rats in your attic, obviously you don’t want them there = pest.

It really isn’t the fault of the weed or bug, it is just doing what its supposed to do. Live and breed, I know as long as it doesn’t happend in your home. So keep up with the pest, keep the weeds down and home seal to prevent the pest or wildlife from getting into your home.

EPA Compiles a Master Bed Bug Resource List About Treatment, Prevention, More to be Housed by BedBug Central

With the onslaught of this Bed Bug issue, I think it was a great idea to house all this information in one central location. ProBest Pest Management                 602-249-7378 is a proud Gold Member of PESP  (Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program) since 2005. This can be a handy tool, especially kept in one convenient location. The NPMA (National Pest Management Association) also has a ton of great information for Consumers at their website. Bed bugs for example are being spread rapidly by us everyday, via planes, trains and all the modes we use to travel. They can hide in luggage and clothes and easily show up at your home or business.
