Oh, yes they were. Winter is the time for rodents to try get into our homes. Birds including pigeons also will roost within attics and can cause some real issues not to mention the noise. You might even think you have ghost, OK I’m kidding about the ghost. But noises should draw your attention to possible critters in the attic, the sooner you solve this problem the less chance of BIGGER issues. Remember parasites and other pests can create some issues bigger than what you might of had.

Rodents will burrow into and through insulation, animals/wildlife can also set up home with the walls of that attic. So keep an eye out for burrowing and rodent feces.

It’s interesting sometimes to see and read different perspectives concerning pest control. As a Pest Controller I see the need everyday for pesticides but I would say that I partial to the need for pesticides against the things that I fight daily.

Feedback by clients or customers!

Feedback by clients or customers!

I was recently asked by my Chemical Distributor (Univar) for my opinion, they actually flew me to Dallas, TX and conducted a feedback session for two days for input related to my experiences with their company –  field and inside sales department. I participated with 16 other members from across the US and I must tell you it was an informative and eye opening experience. I must hand it to management – this was a great idea and I hope enlightening for them as well. We talked about expectations of online services, field and inside sales and how they could make the experience easier and better for us.

So this got me to thinking about how ProBest Pest Management can seek out those experiences from our customers. We do gage some of our work from review sites like Kudzu.com and MerchantCircle.com and Manta right on our home seal site. You can always send us an email ProBest Pest Management – contact us. Did you know that we have a VIP page just for our loyal customers?

First Annual Sexiest Insect Award

First Annual Sexiest Insect Award

So this week “The Onion” published this article -“Kim Jong-Un Named The Onion‘s Sexiest Man Alive For 2012” the publication is a satirical and humorous rendition of the news. A little parady of the Sexiest Man of 2012. Apparently some news agencies in China haven’t figured it out yet.

UPDATE: For more coverage on The Onion’s Sexiest Man Alive 2012, Kim Jong-Un, please visit our friends at the People’s Daily in China, a proud Communist subsidiary of The Onion, Inc. Exemplary reportage, comrades. The Onion

So in honor of this great news worthy announcement ProBest Pest Management announces it’s choice for the Sexiest Bug of 2012:

It just has to be the “Bed Bug“, Bedbugs are making a big comeback in the U.S., pest management companies are reporting a 95% increase in calls. They can be found in homes, apartments, hotels, motels, dorm rooms, shelters, movie theaters, schools and modes of transportation including moving vans. International travel has undoubtedly contributed to the resurgence of bed bugs in this country. So stay tuned maybe next year we will have another chance for some fun…

Travel Bugs = Bed Bugs.

A little play on words, what is the travel bug – Bed Bugs of course!

Well in just about a week people will begin the Holiday traveling season, traveling to see relatives or friends. Hopefully not many will be bringing back any hitchhikers like Bed Bugs. So with traveling just ahead of us, here are a few tips for safety from National Pest Management Association and ProBest Pest Management:

  • Thoroughly inspect the entire room with a flashlight before unpacking, including behind the headboard, under lights, and inside dressers, drawers, sofas and chairs. I prefer to leave my luggage in the bathroom and hand my clothes on the shower rod.
  • Pull back the sheets and inspect the mattress seams and box springs, particularly at the corners, for telltale stains, spots or shed bed bug skins.
  • Place suitcase in a plastic trash bag during the duration of your trip to ensure that bed bugs cannot take up residence there prior to departure. *Tip: Pack clothes in zip lock bag for easy cleaning upon returning home.
  • Do not place luggage on upholstered surfaces. The safest place is in the bathroom in the middle of a tile floor or on a luggage rack after it has been thoroughly inspected. Do not use a luggage rack if it has hollow legs, where bed bugs may hide unseen.
  • If you notice bed bugs in your room, notify management and request to change rooms immediately.
  • Do not move to a room adjacent and/or directly above/below the suspected infestation.
  • When you return home, inspect your suitcases before bringing them into the house.
  • Vacuum your suitcase thoroughly before bringing indoors and storing away.
  • Wash all of your clothes – even those items you haven¹t worn – in hot water to remove any bed bugs or eggs that may have traveled home with you. Dry clean only clothes should be thrown in the dryer and run on high heat.

Water damage to your wood home.

Water damage can occur and ruin your wood home.

water damage

water damage

Water can be the life blood or it can even cause issues with the way we build homes in the way it causes water damage. When flashing on a roof allows water to seep in, the wood gets wet and then dries. Chimneys are often the cause if incorrectly fitted with flashing. This interaction causes brown cubicle rot, this rot looks like a wood burnt piece of wood. It is really important to understand this action and take precautions against it. When water does enter a home it takes the path of least resistance and often follows a path straight down. This often causes the water to seep through the termiticide in the ground and could allow termites to enter that area. The more water through a termiticide barrier, breaks down the termiticide and may allow termites into the structure.

This fungus also would generally fail a (WDIIR) Wood Destroying Insect Infestation Report, bear in mind that this report doesn’t get into a lengthy discussion on water and fungus but typically relates to termites and other insects. Letting mold grow unchecked in your home can have negative consequences both for your checkbook and your health. Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants. Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return. Typically in Arizona we don’t have to worry about moisture levels but if there is a water leak it needs to corrected immediately. Just remember mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors. As always if you find that you have wood rot please give us a call at 602-249-7378 ProBest Pest Management.

Rodents and your home, what do you need to know?

Rodents and your home, what do you need to know?

You must know your enemy! An inspection of your home or business is the first part of your investigation. Most people don’t really care to think about these little furry invaders of our home, but think you must. These creatures carry diseases and can pass along other not so fun stuff, like parasites and other pests. So what should you look for:

  1. Any opening which could allow rodents to slip into your home.
  2. Check high and low, check the ceiling, attic  and crawlspace areas thoroughly.
  3. Check the garbage areas, it can often be about food sources.
  4. Have you seen signs of activity, feces or strange smells.
  5. Check the attic, also look for chewed wires.
  6. Trees should not touch the structure, this is like a super highway into the home or business.
  7. Check screens or windows, check that they are in place and not damaged.
  8. Check to see that doors are equipped with door sweeps.
  9. Check where wires come into the building for signs of rub marks.
  10. Don’t leave pet food laying around indoors or outdoors.
  11. Check out buildings for nesting of birds or rodents, check under buildings if they are raised. Checks decks and other types of structures – like gazebos, swings or play areas.
  12. Check garage door seals.

If you decide to attack the issues yourself, use care and caution. If you need some expert advice see out a Pest Management Professional and THINK like a mouse…
