Urban Myth – maybe so on Praying Mantis

You thought having bugs was a real pain, the mating process is a lot tougher on those bugs  involved. The Black Widow, well we know how she got her name and the Praying Mantis often get their heads chopped off my one or the other in that mating ritual. So now we have the ultimate answer, or maybe not. “Do Female Praying Mantis always eat the males?”,  Published in Entomology Today and video from the Smithsonian Channel.

This is what our ProBest homepage looks like and it looks like Professionals is right at the top.

A few pictures from my readers…

One of the things I would often mention to my Scouts as we were hiking was to not just look at the ground but to look around and capture the majesty of the world. These pictures are a prime example of that hidden world we often just cruise right on by. The first two pictures I believe are tent caterpillars and the last two pictures are some type of funnel spider from the area of Havasupai Falls in Arizona, located at the Grand Canyon.

So get out and explore the often hidden world of bugs and send me a few pictures, thanks to C. Brannon for these.

How did Halloween get so scary?

BOO!

OK really how did all this weird stuff start and how did it come to bear on Halloween anyway? Here is the answer – its because it is associated with the DEVIL and we dress up to make the dead think we are dead as well. November 1st is regarded as a time to honor Saints and Martyrs and the evening before is considered to be All Hallows’ Eve. So from the far corners of our minds and the darkness that resides there, comes the creepy and crawly things like spiders, rats and bats.

Beware the cave of death!

probestpestmanagementIMAG0952

Beware the cave of death! Not really but it does hold the Arizone Bark Scorpions. It is fun to show off these little pests that can easily make it into homes and businesses.

One of the perks of my teaching or events that I attend is the fact that I have bugs and stuff to show off. That is a big draw for children of all ages, they all want to see the collection.

You never know who you might meet, bug author?

probestpestIMAG0958

I had the opportunity to meet a rather intesresting author the other day (Conrad Storad) – I was impressed with his book “Fang and Stinger – An Arachnid Story”. Not only does he take the child on a great adventure but he also teaches them along the way with his books. Please check out his books Five Star Publications.

What’s in your meter box or sprinkle system box?

Cockroaches, spiders, snakes – yep I’ve seen all of the stuff listed.

probestpestmanagementIMAG0841

Does your pest control operator/technician treat your meter boxes, they should. I frequently see all kinds of bugs in these boxes and it may be just a matter of time before someone sticks their hand into the box and gets a nasty bite or sting. Special note – I sometimes will find honeybees deciding to make that box a h0me. Maybe big enough now but they will eventaully move but not before stinging or hurting someone. Bee Careful…
