Pee or poop

Pee or poop or a combination of both, rodents? That would be my first professional estimation, the rodents are coming there for a reason and now I have to figure out why. What is drawing them to that location? Rats are a little shy while mice are curious, so which is it? Looking at the poop, they look large enough for a rats versus the mouse.

What types or diseases to rodents have and why should you be concerned? Did you know that mice urinate as they run, yuck? So you don’t what any of these beasts in your home.

Attic infestation

Attic infestation, can be caused by many critters including mice and rats. But they are not the only ones, have you considered wildlife like raccoons, birds and bats. Remember mice only need a hole the size of a dime and a rat a quarter. I think everyone should inspect their home twice a year, maybe the attic once a year maybe at Christmas. Attic infestation can occur from a few days to months. Take the packages into the garage and open them up. You don’t or need bugs or rats inside your home. That in itself could cause you hours or time you could be buying me a gift. This also goes for sheds, check that shed at least once during the summer and once during the winter. The National Pest Management Association constantly updates articles at their site, check it out for Fall and Winter pests. They also included a Bug Barometer for the seasons. Walk around the outside checking for honeybees and holes underneath. If you spot holes, or poop it’s time to call ProBest Pest Management 602-249-7378. Signs:

Open holes, check the louvered screens and weep holes.
Look around insulation for tunnels.

Meeses in the house

Meeses, OK I know the plural of mouse is mice, not meese but just had to mess with things. Plus coming up with keywords is difficult as there are only so many to choose from. Have you ever checked your attic for signs of rodent infestation or signs of other pests. You need to check screening or weep holes, the vents in each end of attic. Check your home for pipe entry points and seal the area around and protrusion. Check door sweeps and maintain window screens. Don’t just check the tops, if you see evidence dig deeper.

Gophers

Gophers and the movie Caddy Shack, see link below. One of my all time favorite comedy hits. I still laugh every time that Gopher dances and makes fun of the landscaper. Now that I do rodent control, it isn’t a laughing matter anymore. These varmints eat roots and new shoots and can be quire destructive. So it is important to keep them at bay and stop them from damaging your lawn and plants. Rats and rodents in general continue to grow their teeth and need a way to keep them useable and sharp. Bait and rodent stations

Bait and rodent stations – So something and not the rats have been eating my bait. Here is the bait I use versus an anticoagulant.

In turn, a pet or predator would have to eat a huge number of rodents that ate a small amount of bait to become ill. Most pets don’t eat dead rodents….they may bring them to your doorstep but most do not consume the carcass. Of course you must do your part and use discretion on where you place the bait for the rodents so it is out of reach of children and pets.

Terad3 causes hypervitaminosis (vitamin poisoning) which in turn causes calcification of the rodents heart, lungs and other important organs which of course leads to death.

Burrows/Rodents/Squirrels

Liberty Wildlife We recently moved into a newly built facility and had a few problems with rodents. Due to the nature of our business wildlife care we constantly strive to hatch, protect and raise wildlife. Rain

O boy all that rain, over 2+ inches here in Arizona. Thanks to Hurricane Rosa. Unusual for that much water in a few days, and its flooding everywhere. All this brings the bugs out in force and I’m expecting termi8te activity to bump up quickly. What can you expect?

Termite activity – check your slab foundation outside and inside for tubes.
Increase activity on scorpions, water may push them in.
Just like above ants may wonder in to get away from water.
This tarantula below was under a French door (thanks Chas A.) he/she was seeking shelter.
This is termite season in Arizona, after the monsoons so as usual do a monthly check of your home.
Honeybees may be swarming as well

Pocket Gophers

Pocket Gophers

Pocket gophers can be quite the destructive pests, they eat roots and often go unnoticed until the plant is dead. Look for those suspicious dug up soil patterns in the grass or dirt. Females and males share some burrows and nesting areas if their territories border, but in general they tend to hang out in their own tunnels. Even though they can look all cuddly they are still a wild animal and in it for themselves.

Did you know?

Breed in early Spring to early Summer.
The typical gopher can move approximately 1 ton of soil each year.
Not known to carry a significate source of disease.
They have often been known to carry external parasites
Known Predators—including owls, hawks, snakes, weasels, cats, dogs, and coyotes—eat pocket gophers.

Rat Catcher

Rat Catcher one of those jobs people don’t do anymore. I must admit, most of those jobs were tough and I wouldn’t want to do them either. The grossest one was used teeth salesperson, yuuuuuck. Times do change thank goodness and new and better jobs will always pop up. It’s like doing Pest Control in Arizona when the temperature is over 115 degrees, I know it’s a dry heat.

So what new jobs will be available, robots will be doing more and more. Fast food employees will be done away with by mechanical systems, taxi drivers eliminate by self driving cars etc. When I was in Seattle at Pestworld a few years ago, they had a GPS self driven device to scare away birds at airports so a Pest technician might be replaced but that’s a long time away I believe.

Clutter in and around your home

Clutter in and around your home is an open ended invitation to come hang out if your a pests. Don’t allow cluttered areas because they are ideal in hiding pests including, scorpions, rodents and cockroaches. The ideal yard is free from trash, trees and bushes are away from structure and block walls and water is only on plants and not excessive. Wood is OK as long as it is on some type of raised platform and I would prefer it to not be against a block wall. The wood needs to breath and not hold moisture.

If your not using the wood its better to throw it out. Throw away trash, my theory is if you haven’t touched it in a year throw is out. Watch for cockroaches under garbage cans and don’t allow water to accumulate in containers which might promote mosquitoes. Mow the grass and keep the weeds down – We do weed treatments. 602-249-7378.
