Hazards, what hazards?

Hazards, what hazards?

Probably most service people will tell you it’s the dog that is the most potential of a problem. I don’t usually have issues with the pooches but occasionally one is out to get me. This last week it was a Chihuahua Dog, this dog thought it was a Pit bull. It stood its ground and just dared me to enter it’s yard, which I didn’t. My biggest scare was a Pit Bull, the owner put the dog into the garage and it decided it was coming through the window – it jumped onto a wooden bench and came flying through the open window. Almost got me and I was doing everything in my power to get out of that back yard. You probably heard that saying “NO one can hear you scream in space? Probably true cause I was yelling like a mad man, lucky for me I was carrying my measuring wheel. No bites in over 25 years – not bad! My biggest concern is hitting a electrical line while doing termite work….

So take care service people of the world…

200x’s the sniffer – Bed Bug Dogs

200x’s the sniffer – Bed Bug Dogs

I’m all about efficiency but the Bed Bug dogs got it going on. I had this school that thought they might have an issue with Bed Bugs and I thought WOW just how many places could a Bed Bug hide. Well I can now tell you – thousands maybe tens of thousands. From carpet tack strips to electrical outlets, from back packs and wall paintings to – well you get the picture right – anyplace where there is a crack or crevice. It only takes a small space ——————————– maybe that line right there to hide something like a Bed Bug. That dog Olivia was amazing, she went around the room with her handler and sniffed and sniffed, this would have taken me hours and I might have missed something.

Come on look at that face – only a Bed Bug should be scared!

Cimex K9 – A Bed Bug Experience by ProBest Pest Management

Cimex K9 – A Bed Bug Experience by ProBest Pest Management

I often speak about technology and with the advent of Bed Bugs it is great to see an ally in the industry. Dogs can smell way better than we can and can be rated – in this case by The Bed Bug Dog Registry. We use a team of dogs from Cimex K9 and the other day I had an opportunity to see them in action. Eric (handler) and Kohl (expert bed bug sniffer dog).

Well anyway here is the story, somebody got Bed Bugs and after the treatment wanted to make absolutely, positively certain there were no Bed Bugs in this home. It was also a great experience for us, Seth did a remarkable job (as always) and Kohl didn’t find anything except a few dead things. Which is good because Kohl only hits on LIVE.  Eric does play a little game with Kohl, just to be sure he is on the game, after the inspection he hides a bottle with a few Bed Bugs in it just to make sure Kohl in on game and you see by the pictures that Kohl did an excellent job.

So whether before or after we can get the K9 involved to assist in either the pre-inspection or post-inspection.

Sleep tight and Don’t let the Bed Bugs Bite!

What’s sleeping in your bed?

What’s sleeping in your bed?

The more I watch TV the more it scares me, I hate those commercials that say “How old is your bed, if your bed is over 8 years it has 10 pounds of stuff in it”, just what I don’t want to hear. It’s bad enough thinking about dust mites or worse yet Bed Bugs but you spend a great deal of time in that bed.

When the Great Bed Bug scare came I decided we needed to invest in some mattress and box spring en-casements and let me tell you I can now sleep without the thought of those critters jumping around more than counting sheep. There are a few side benefits about these en-casements, here they are:

  • They keep things in and things out, now remember Bed Bugs just don’t live on beds.
  • They keep out urine, sweat and anything else you might spill on them. Accidents happen like babies sprouting a geyser or the accidental dog or cat issue.
  • Allergens especially within the bed can be kept to a minimal amount.
  • These en-casements are not like years of past, they are crinkly and make noise. They aren’t as hot either.

So think about an en-casement as a way to protect and maybe extend the life of that mattress and box spring.

Pets versus Pests…

     Pets versus Pests…

I think I speak for many of us with our fondness of our pets, Americans love their pets and cats have recently overtaken dogs in popularity. I have two dogs Lilly my Beagle and Gracie my Beagle Corgie mix (I think).

What kind of pests can attack our pets? Fleas, ticks are just a few, so what can we do to protect our beloved pets? Many people use those products that are put onto the pets, the pests bite and die from the pesticide. I prefer the ones with an IGR or Insect Growth Regulator which inhibits the growth of the flea or tick.

Remember that on any trips to the desert or even to the dog park, your pets can pick up ticks or fleas. The other way the pests may get at your pets is from traveling critters such as squirrels, raccoons or skunks or maybe feral cats getting into your yards.

Feeding Pigeons and Feral Cats.

Often times we as humans don’t easily recognize how we influence conditions around our homes and businesses. We feed the wildlife and they in fact may suffer from our lack of knowledge or in thinking that we know better than everyone else.  Quick story – chipmunks or squirrels at a famous attraction, someone feeds the squirrels get bitten and now it’s the squirrels fault. they had to take away the wildlife because someone was feeding thew wildlife. Same story as Yellowstone National Park, a parent holds a child up over the head of a wild bison. You never know when that bison will decide he doesn’t like you and who suffers then – the child.

Dog bites………….

Dog bites………….

800,000 dog bites every year approximately – require medical attention in the United States.

I recently heard that cats now outnumber dogs as the pet of choice here in the U.S. and I guess you don’t normally hear about cat bites but they do scratch so be careful. Maricopa County has also issued a concern about the over population of cats. Check out the Maricopa County Animal Control page for more information. While on on this subject Pit Bulls get a bad rap, I’ve had more issues with little dogs. Sometimes I think they think they are big dogs especially defending something. I have witnessed a handshake turn into a snarling dog who maybe became jealous of all that action.
