What do you think are the World’s Deadliest Insects?

I ran across this story from back in February 2014 “8 Deadliest Insects in the World.” My guess was correct as I frequently mention it in many of my bug presentations. So what do you think are the top eight? Go ahead and take a good guess.

I asked this question just this last week at the Nature Camp, can you name the bugs that bite or sting here in Arizona?

  • Honeybees
  • Wasps
  • Scorpions
  • Mosquitoes
  • Ticks
  • Assassin Bugs
  • Bed Bugs
  • Some flies

Do you remember those science fair projects?

I remember one I did way back in the 6th or 7th grade on Monocot and Dicot seeds. I think I got an A on it but it has been some time and by the way I did learn something. So this kid Simon Kaschock-Marenda did a project on Truvia, his original intention was to see if it affected the health of fruit flies. His findings may amaze or alarm you but hey isn’t that where ideas are born? I may have to try a little experiment myself.

Tip of the Day – Make sure your drains are filled with water to prevent infestations of American Roaches often called sewer roaches. That P-Trap needs to have water to prevent gases and things from coming up the piping.

What is an occasional pests?

These are bugs that invade homes from time to time, most don’t cause damage.

Crickets, earwigs and other pests that accidentally for the most part find their way into the home. This can also include mosquitoes and flies. So generally speaking a good outdoor program will do the trick, why run the risk of putting pesticide into your home air space. Many companies still tout this as the normal service and I’m here to tell you most work can be done from outside and work. Sometimes and I will say it again sometimes you may have to have work done inside but it can be targeted to the pest and limited to a specific insect. Its IPM and it works.

Some flies have stripes, why do Zebra’s have stripes?

Blending in, right?

Some flies have stripes, is it to blend in. I really thought that it was to blend in but I was wrong. Looks like the reason for their stripes has to do with warding off insects. “Why do Zebra’s have stripes? To keep the bugs off.

Have you seen those TV shows in the Arctic where the flying insects looked like there were zillions. The poor animals having to endure the biting and blood sucking pests. It is amazing to me to see that animals adapt to environments such as these. I have been camping many years ago and the mosquitoes would just drive you nuts, you couldn’t get away from them. I also remember canoeing down the Wekiva river and being attacked by deer flies and horseflies. Those bites really hurt. So it looks like all I had to do was paint myself black and white.

Most insects are a benefit to man, what are the bad ones or good ones?

I think if we had to say bad, the number 1 bad guy would be the mosquito and #2 would probably be the flea. But what about the good ones, such as honeybees except when they attack and ants. Some may fit into both categories such as honeybees – great honey and they pollinate but may also sting and hurt. I guess I can think of the good and bad as somewhat of a trade off, we need pollination and yet people die from bee stings each year. Termites are essential in the forest, composting trees and wood into vital nutrients within the soil.

Top 5 bad in my opinion

  1. Mosquitoes
  2. Scorpions
  3. Fleas
  4. Flies
  5. Rodents

Top 5 good in my opinion

  1. Honeybees
  2. Ants
  3. Butterflies or Moths
  4. Ladybugs
  5. ____________      Can you name a few more?

What is up with flies and dead things?

  • The life cycle of flies play an important role in the decomposition of dead bodies and in nature this is how dead animals etc are turned back into soil and nutrients.
  • It’s not just flies but beetles and other bugs help to turn flesh into soil nutrients.
  • Blow flies are most often associated with dead things.
  • Blow flies can find dead flesh within minutes.
  • A fly maggot mass can reduce the body weight of a dead animal by 50% in a few weeks.
  • The study of this is called Forensic Entomology and concerns the time and manner of death.
