Rodents aren’t just a problem in NYC, how about Arizona?

“Harlem says rats to blame for telephone woes“, you may think they have their issues and yes they do but we also have issues with rodents. There was a issue a year or so ago where rabbits were chewing/gnawing on vehicle wiring and that can be a real headache if you need your car in a hurry.

The front incisors of rodents never stop growing, In fact, continuously growing front teeth is a trait shared by all rodents from the tiniest mouse to the largest rodent. Observing mice & rats who have nothing to gnaw upon, its been found that these incisors can grow up to five inches per year.
Rats have strong teeth that allow them to chew through glass, cinderblock, wire, aluminum and lead.
Rodents need to chew four to five hours each day just to keep their teeth gnawed down to the point that they are able to eat. If their teeth grow too long they will die of starvation.
There is a very high sodium content in electrical and cable wiring. This makes the wires taste good to the rodents, but can lead to wire failure & is a fire hazard. Check your home-owner’s insurance policies to see if it covers fire if it is a result of rodents chewing on wires.

Floating slab pics

It is essential for a termite treater to understand and know what slab they are treating. Floating slabs are concrete slabs with a deepened and reinforced perimeter. This type of foundation is called a floating slab because it floats on the soil. They are used as foundations for home, businesses, sheds, car garages, additions etc.

Post tension slabs give the best protection from my point of view, cables are run throughout concrete and tightened up. Concrete is less likely to crack and allow termites to enter.

What is the definition of “Child Abuse”?

Is child abuse, the actual hitting of a child or not providing for them? Is child abuse, the act of verbal abuse or not providing for them? How about a pest or rodent infested house, is that child abuse?

I have to give Kudo’s to my industry on staying ahead of the curve, the National Pest Management Association has a Online Program that addresses the new and upcoming technology and updated news. They produced a program a year or so ago on Bed Bugs and have just brought forth a update from OSHA to the change of the (MSDS) Material Safety Data Sheet to the (SDS) or Safety Data Sheets.

The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) is now aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This update to the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) will provide a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets.

Always be on the lookout for something that looks like these pictures, termites build these tubes to protect themselves and to gain entry into your home.

Subterranean termites live in the ground and these mud tubes are often visible on your foundation. So if your checking your home and see something like this, it is time to call a Pest Management Professional.

What’s happening in your neighborhood?

This story scared me and I wanted to bee sure everyone paid attention to issues in your neighborhood. This story takes place in Florida but could easily be Arizona, Texas or any place where bees can make a home. This home in Port Orange, Florida had been plagued in the past but now that it is vacant it continues to be a problem in their neighborhood. I suggest that we all have something at stake in a neighborhood where there might be a foreclosed or vacant home. Here are my tips to stay safe when it comes to bees:

Check your home monthly especially in the Spring and Fall for unwanted guests.
Check the roof line and if you have a crawlspace make sure all doors are sealed.
Home seal your home.
Check the door thresholds, make sure they are sealed.
Check screens, repair or adjust if needed.
Check out building as well, sheds, cottages etc.
Bee work may not be a Do It Yourself (DIY) project, use caution or call a Pest Management Professional.

Spiders are not on my good list, big or small. I have always been terrified of these pests, especially one as large as this one. Big enough to carry a child away, OK I’m exaggerating a bit, right? Things to do to keep these monsters out of your home:

Tight, really tight doors and screens.
Home-seal your home.
Install garage door seals.
Use monitoring glue boards to see what is getting into the garage.
Don’t bring in boxes from attic or outside without checking them.
Always use gloves when moving anything from outside.

Some people are just plain out there, now I know what happens when someone really ticks you off and you want revenge. I believe in Karma, sometimes you just have to wait and see what happens but getting even doesn’t really help. Not that I know for sure about this. “Main Line Realtor fired for (Alleged) rodent dumping“. (Alleged) keep that in mind – I don’t suggest doing this, remember there are cameras everywhere.

Just when you thought you had heard every story in the book, I have a new one for you. The office staff in the United Kingdom thought there was a dead pigeon or something stinking up the place. So like any responsible person they called in a Pest Company to check their chimney. Ohhhhhh nooooooo – what do you think they found, yep a burglar had tried to get in and got stuck and died. “Pest Control man called called in to check stench in offices found dead burglar wedged in chimney“.

I’ll bet that will be a story to pass along to the Grand-kids, Guess what I found in a chimney once? No not Santa Claus but a burglar….
