Established in 1994, the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP) is an EPA partnership program. It works with the nation’s pesticide-user community to promote Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. PESP is guided by the principle that partnership programs complement the standards and decisions established by regulatory and registration actions. The informed actions of chemical users can further reduce the risks from pests and pesticides. By playing a major role in ensuring human health and environmental safety.

PESP members are also encouraged to get involved in PESP goals, which currently include:

  • IPM in Schools Program – aims to reduce the risk that chemical exposure poses to children and school employees by promoting sensible applications of pesticides around schools.
  • Landscaping Initiative – seeks to enhance the environmental, human health, and economic benefits associated with landscapes while reducing the need for pesticides, fertilizers, irrigation, and energy inputs by working in concert with nature.
  • Tick IPM – seek to identify the most cost effective approaches to reduce tick encounters and incidence of tick borne diseases by collaborating with partners (federal, state, local government, NGOs, growers) that actively share experiences on pest prevention strategies.

Have you done whatever it takes to keep out rodents?

garagedoorthreshold

Nothing is probably worse than seeing a mouse inside your house, everything goes through your mind. How do I capture it, what do I do with it, can I do it myself and its goes on and on? The best thing to do, is to never have one get into your home. So what can you do:

  1. Repair all holes and cracks in your home.
  2. Don’t take in boxes which might have room enough for a mouse.
  3. Repair screens.
  4. Repair door seals and thresholds.
  5. Repair garage door seals.
  6. Don’t leave doors open.
  7. Don’t leave pet food out.

If they are already in the home, glue boards do work but be careful if you have pets or children. Never, never use baits inside a home. Never, never use baits inside a home, yes I said that twice.

If your allergic, it might only take one sting to kill you.

This story from Texas is sad, but it gives us insight into the fact that just one sting from an insect could kill you. “Texas student dies after allergic reaction reportedly caused by ants on football field“.

Just one sting from a honeybee or wasp can kill some people, it is more rare for Fire Ants to kill someone. However the Red Imported Fire Ant continues its move across the U.S. Here is some information from the University of Florida – IFAS office on Red Imported Fire Ants.

New data suggest that insect sting allergy is increasing.

So you’ve been lucky, never been attacked or stung by an insect. Is it luck or are you one of those who may die if stung and you just don’t know it yet? “The rise of deadly insect sing allergies: Is there a cure?” published by Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology article by Medical press.

“Insect sting allergy is increasing, affecting five percent of the population. But what much of the population may not understand is that there is something that can be done about it.”

I’m extremely fortunate that I’m not allergic, especially since I’m in the biz?  So here are a few tips:

  1. Just because you see a honeybee doesn’t mean its going to attack. They are out looking for food and probably could care less about you. Unless, unless yes I said that twice you encounter an Africanized Honeybee colony?
  2. Wear light colored clothes while hiking, honeybees are less likely to become aggressive.
  3. Always wear shoes outside, don’t set them by the backdoor. Scorpions and Black widow spiders may make it their new home.
  4. If you are stung, watch the symptoms – if you feel weird in any way call 911 right away.
  5. You can also check in with Poison Control 1-800-222-1222, this is also a number that should be taught to children
  6. Arizona has some special creepy little things like rattlesnakes, Gila monsters, Africanized Honeybees, tarantulas (usually harmless unless you provoke them), spiders and my favorite Assassin Bug.

The only one thing I noticed was the talk about bathtubs and drains, my opinion is that the scorpions may drop into the tub from above and they might go down the drain to drink but I don’t believe that they swim or come up drains. Thanks to Arizona Kids Magazine for this super video.

What happens when you get stung?

What happens when you get stung?

Food allergy is the leading cause of anaphylaxis; however, medications, insect stings, and latex can also cause an allergic reaction that leads to anaphylaxis.

I found this article in Pest Management Professional magazine November 2012 and they listed the source http://www.niaid.nih.gov the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

  • Allergies to venom of stinging insects such as honeybees, wasps, hornet, yellowjackets, scorpions and fireants
  • Systemic reactions in adults ranging from 3.3% to 5%
  • 40 to 100 deaths annually from anaphylaxis

When stung call 911 or Poison Control immediatley if you are a known allergic or if you experience symptoms.

Health Concerns About the Misuse of Pesticides for Bed Bug Control” As a member of PESP I wanted to share this, It  is a must read article on scams and pesticide use for Bed Bugs! Also here is some additional information they have posted in that article.

Important phone numbers and Web sites

If you believe you or a family member has become ill from a pesticide exposure:

Call your local poison control center: 1-800-222-1222, your local hospital emergency room, or the National Pesticide Information Center at 1-800-858-7378.  You can also call the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  Information Line at 1-800-CDC-INFO for information about pesticides.

If you believe your pet has become ill from a pesticide exposure:

Contact your local veterinarian or call the National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.

I will add one more important item from my list – Before hring anyone check them out: Within the last week I have had an opportunity to bid against someone who quoted a price of $150 for a 3 bedroom house – my price was over $1000. I also believe that they intended to only use pesticides – it is my opinion that this will not work in all circumstances and again I also believe it is important for people to understand about the use of pesticides within homes.

I suggest you wear your shoes!

I suggest you wear your shoes!

It’s dark outside and you need to run to the garage, so you ask yourself “Should I put on my shoes?” – The answer is an unequivocal – YES. Bark Scorpions pack a sting that could send you to the hospital and this whopper – Desert Hairy Scorpion will sting you but generally is not as bad as the Bark Scorpion.
