Kudo’s to Phoenix Magazine

Kudo’s to Phoenix Magazine

They recently ran a story on “Sticker Shock” December 2012 by Tom Marcinko in Phoenix Magazine on the new Scorpion anti-venom. We ran a home seal “Face the Facts” back in August 2011 on the new technology including the new anti-venom. So how about a few “Did you know that?”

  1. Scorpions typically eat insects, but their diet can be extremely variable—another key to their survival in where they live.If you can get rid of their harborage (where they hide, or where their food hides) it will help control them.
  2. The venom, a neuro-toxin, it is held in a gland at the tip of the tail and is injected through its stinger to kill prey by affecting the central nervous system. Sometimes they can sting us by accident, always wear gloves and never put your hands where you can’t see.
  3. Rain or the lack of rain, cold or the lack of cold can make the scorpions here in Arizona move and cause a few problems. I suggest homesealing your home.
  4. The time to know about scorpions is before you are stung, read the stories above and take care!

Station 10 – New Fire Station in Gilbert, Arizona

Station 10 – New Fire Station in Gilbert, Arizona

Congratulations to the City of Gilbert, Arizona on their new GOLD Fire Station #10 building. It is considered as a Gold energy building and has solar installed. ProBest Pest Management has the honor of keeping the fire fighters safe from bugs, so we attended the ribbon cutting on Saturday September 15th, 2012. I was greatly impressed with the time and effort that went into the design and work of this Gold standard building. I was also impressed with the young fire fighters that were all dressed up to honor their hero’s.

Bugs a plenty, they were everywhere… I love it!

Bugs a plenty, they were everywhere… I love it!

We stopped for breakfast the other morning in Cordes Lakes on I-17 just north of Phoenix at the 50’s Backseat Diner and on FaceBook and spotted these bugs just hanging outside on a fence. Of course the consummate bug hunter that I am, we had to take pictures and hoo and haaaa about them.

More importantly, the food is great and worth the stop. I had the “Three Deuces” ( Biscuits and gravy, sausage and 2 eggs sunny side up. Fantastic!

Termidor WG80, Termidor SC and Termidor Dry

The choice of Pest Management Professionals………..

We offer our customers a choice of two termiticides, today we will discuss Termidor by BASF and tomorrow Transport by FMC.

Termidor 80 WG (the “WG” in Termidor 80 WG stands for wettable granule)  and Termidor SC (the “SC” in Termidor SC stands for suspended concentrate.) when mixed with water they make the same type of solution. They are in fact different formulations of the same product.

  1. Kills by ingestion, contact, and the “Transfer Effect” meaning affected insects help spread Termidor throughout the colony before dying themselves.
  2. Manages colonies up to 6 times faster than bait systems.
  3. Most effective termiticide – over 10 years of test data prove most effective and fastest at eliminating termite populations.
  4. Responsible, low-dose treatment, with no odor.

Termite TreatmentBASF also introduced a dry formulation “Termidor Dry” that can be injected into galleries and wood members where termites are present.

The one and only issue I have is this – months after a job is completed with Termidor another colony of termites may attempt to gain access into the home. Termidor does allow this, however in 90 days the termites will be dead. You don’t want a termiticide to kill to fast as the termites will block tunnels on the dead termites. Now the issue is a callback, most people when they see a tube or tunnel will call and want us to return – so it’s a callback for me. Don’t get me wrong all those little termites will be dead (I think) in the tunnels but a rebuilt tube is a rebuilt tube….

and now ——- Termidor HE Co pack – High Efficiency

Termidor HE Copack expands upon the proven Termidor SC formulation with the addition of a BASF proprietary molecule that temporarily “boosts” the transport of fipronil, the active ingredient in Termidor, into the soil and creates an enhanced protection zone around the structure being treated. Benefits can include applying 50 percent of the water, and thus half the finished solution of a typical Termidor PerimeterPlus application.* It also requires 77 percent smaller trenches and allows for wider hole spacing.

ProBest Pest Management had the opportunity to participate with field trials here in Arizona and this product really works. Why not work with a company that industry manufacturers go to – to test their products? ProBest Pest Management followed protocols and continue to do periodic checks on these homes in the test program.

Reports on the rattlesnake bites in Arizona on the rise” By Associated Press Originally published: Aug 21, 2012 – 3:39 pm reported by the The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center 1-800-222-1222 Prevention Tips

Tips for staying safe from snakes…

  1. All snakes are not bad! Many snakes eat rodents and help to keep down populations.
  2. Wear gloves while out gardening.
  3. If your hiking pay attention to your surroundings. Wear long pants and boots, if your in an area known for being infested knee length boots are probably the good call. Also you can carry a hiking stick. If you hear a rattle stop and listen, determine the location and back away if possible. You can encounter all kinds of wildlife while hiking as well as Africanized Bees.
  4. If the snake is on your property call a Pest Management Professional to remove it, it is not necessary to kill it.
  5. If bitten call 911 immediately – remain calm, don’t panic. Get to a hospital or get treatment ASAP.

Gilbert Arizona Pest Control

Gilbert Arizona Pest Control – Blog marketing – Social Media, ProBest Pest Management

Yesterdays bug was the Arizona Brown Spider—–

I remember way back when – when the only options available for marketing was the phone book, OK maybe the newspaper as well. Some of this cost BIG bucks, I think I remember a large company way back in the early 1990’s paying about $12,000 a month. If you are a small business like ProBest Pest Management you know that this is something that is way out of the reach of most of us.

I also think that today we are able to reach out and actually talk to individuals by way of home seals, Twitter and Facebook. Most of these social media opportunities are free, well in a way you still have to spend the time to be involved and interact. My favorite is home sealing, I get to share what I know in a format hopefully enjoyed by the readers in a method available 24/7/365 and free. I can discuss what is happening in Arizona but might also affect someone in Georgia, case point West Nile Virus to the more recent invasion of Bed Bugs. I watched the Bed Bug invasion start in New York and spread across the U.S. at an alarming rate, travel/vacations all push the problem across the U.S.

I love that we can now get up-to-date emails and information at the speed of 4G, had to say that. You can subscribe to whatever you want, from Mommy home sealings to whatever hobby you may be interested in – and get that information when and where you want it – to your phone, Ipad or email boxes. So maybe it’s only the beginning of how we receive information and in what manner – so hang on tight……..

Your unforgettable Sedona experience must include spending time at internationally renowned Tlaquepaque (pronounced Tla-keh-pah-keh), Sedona Arizona’s Arts & Crafts Village. I love to visit this quaint artistic place off the side of the road in Sedona. Each time I visit I must stop by Rod Bearcloud Berry’s Gallery and you to should check out the art at http://www.bearcloudgallery.com. If this piece (Gadomski) is still there on my next visit I think I may have to purchase it, it represents transformation.

Check out BearCloud Gallery – his paintings are unique and amazing.

When bee’s attack – true story…

When bee’s attack – true story…

Africanized bee’s are not the friendliest and nicest of the bees we have in Arizona, but this story raised my antenna.

Read this story from the International Business Times Africanized Bees: Aggressive Insects Attack Beekeeper in Tennessee.

According to the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, a horde of partially Africanized bees attacked one Tennessee beekeeper a few months ago. A cloud of about 100,000 streamed from a hive and surrounded the man, who ran and jumped into his car. It was five minutes before the swarm gave up its pursuit. The beekeeper, who was wearing protective gear, suffered about 30 stings.

This was an experienced veteran bee keeper, thank goodness he had a bee suit on, or he could have been a dead bee keeper. Bee work in Arizona is not – IS NOT a DIY or Do It Yourself job. Don’t kid yourself, because if you start a job and the bees become nasty there is no shut off switch. You cannot dial them back to nice, they may attack everything in the neighborhood including children, pets and anyone just out having a good time.

Ring-tailed cats and a Black-footed ferret in Arizona

Ring-tailed cats and a Black-footed ferret in Arizona

The ring-tail (Bassariscus astutus) is a mammal of the raccoon family (thus not actually a cat), native to arid regions of North America.

Much like the common raccoon, the ring-tail is nocturnal and solitary. But it is timid and seen much more rarely than raccoons. It is omnivorous, eating fruits, berries, insects, lizards, small rodents, and birds. Foxes, coyotes, raccoons and bobcats will prey upon ring-tails. Hawks and owls may attack the young. They produce a variety of sounds, including clicks and chatters reminiscent of raccoons. A typical call is a very loud, plaintive bark. As adults, these mammals lead solitary lives, generally coming together only to mate. The Ring-tail above is in the collection at Tonto Natural Bridge, just north of Payson, AZ.

Black-footed ferret – A number of years ago I actually ran into one of these at a soccer field but it was deceased. It was in poor condition and at the time I had no idea what it was  and I decided to do some homework to see if I could decide what it was. At least that is what I think it was. The endangered black-footed ferret is a member of the weasel family.
